Imogen- a most important film. @mattwridley explains complex science with outstanding clarity. The importance of the DEFUSE proposal (leaked to DRASTIC) to insert furin cleavage sites into SARS-like coronaviruses to facilitate infection, cannot be understated. The inserted furin cleavage site is likely a "smoking gun" exposing laboratory manipulation. @emilyakopp & @JustinRGoodman are powerful on the frustrations of the journalistic hunt. @DrLiMengYAN1 continues to show real courage in speaking out about events in China. @RepBradWenstrup and @dasher8090 provide crucial intelligence insight on how much was known so early on in Intelligence circles. The overlaps between civilian & military research in the Dual Use technology of Gain of Function are a critical part of the story of the pandemic. Dr Robert Redfield declined repeated interview requests for the UK C4 film I made with David Malone in the summer of 2021. I sensed he was very close to speaking out then, and am grateful he has done so now. I consider Dr Redfield's clear & cogent interview to be the single most important part of the film. He was Director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and should have been at the heart of the international response to the pandemic. Instead, he was shut out. Just as the ability of his China CDC colleague, Dr George Gao, to speak freely was shut down. With lethal consequences. Dr Redfield's insider struggles against a power structure determined to suppress investigation of the lab leak hypothesis mirror the experience of those on the outside. Scientists like @R_H_Ebright Profs Relman & Petrovsky, @Ayjchan & @JamieMetzl . The meticulous citizen researchers of DRASTIC incl @gdemaneuf @MonaRahalkar @TheSeeker268 & many many others. The "Conspiracy Theory" charge was weaponized to shut down investigation & even discussion of the origin of Covid-19. The direct consequence is that Gain of Function research on potential pandemic pathogens continues apace. As Dr Redfield says, a Bird Flu pandemic would be devastating. I note that Avian Influenza has its own sordid Gain of Function history.
