Today would have marked the 108th birthday of legendary physicist, science communicator and #NobelPrize laureate Richard Feynman. Feynman was awarded the 1965 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on quantum electrodynamics, including the introduction of the Feynman diagram.

After a long time, I am travelling by train again, and it is giving me a different kind of happiness. While travelling from Delhi to Jhansi to receive my 72nd Doctorate from a reputed university in Madhya Pradesh, many old memories are coming back to me. In the early days of my KIIT and KISS journey, I used to travel by Rajdhani Express to Delhi. Today, after so many years, travelling again by the same train feels very emotional. I never forget my old habits, old days and old memories. They always keep me grounded, and they continue to inspire me.

मैं कहीं भी रहूँ, मेरे अंदर एक बिहार हमेशा मेरे साथ चलता है। जो 15-20 साल मैंने बिहार में बिताए वह हमेशा से मेरे दिल में बसे हैं। लिट्टी-चोखा की सोंधी महक हो, छठ पूजा का उल्लास भरा माहौल हो, या रोज़मर्रा की कठिनाइयों से लड़ने का हुनर, बिहार हर मोड़ पर याद दिलाता है: मेहनत करो, ईमानदारी से करो और कभी हार मत मानो। आज भी बिहार के कोने-कोने से जब लोगों के संदेश आते हैं, कोई नौकरी के लिए सलाह मांगता है, कोई पढ़ाई के लिए मदद, कोई अपने ideas share करता है, तब महसूस होता है यह सिर्फ संदेश नहीं हैं, यह अपनेपन का वह रिश्ता है, जो मेरा बिहार के साथ अब तक कायम है। नालंदा की ज्ञान परंपरा से लेकर आर्यभट्ट की प्रतिभा तक, बिहार ने हमेशा भारत को दिशा दी है। और आज देश ही नहीं, दुनिया के हर कोने में बिहार के युवा अपनी पहचान बना रहे हैं। मैं बिहार के युवतियों और युवाओं से बस तीन बातें कहना चाहता हूँ: - बड़े सपने देखिए, लेकिन अपनी जड़ों को मत भूलिए। - बिहारियों ने शिक्षा को अपनी सबसे बड़ी ताकत बनाया है। इसे क़ायम रखना है। - और जहाँ भी जाएँ, गर्व से कहिए कि हम बिहारी हैं। मैं कुछ समय से एक मौका ढूंढ रहा हूँ बिहार में कोई investment करने का, पर भावनाओं के साथ साथ feasibility भी ज़रूरी है। आशा है जल्द कुछ हो पाएगा। मेरी ये भी इच्छा है जैसा हमने राजस्थान में दस हज़ार से भी अधिक नंद घर बना के लाखों बच्चों और महिलाओं को सशक्त बनाया है, ठीक वैसे ही बिहार में ऐसा कुछ करें। नंद घर वो centres हैं जहां 6 साल तक के बच्चों को पौष्टिक आहार और शिक्षा मिलती है, और महिलाओं को कौशल विकास के ज़रिए financial independence। बिहार का एक भी बच्चा भूखे पेट न सोए, और प्रतिभाशील महिलाएं financially independent हों, ये एक सपना नहीं है, बल्कि बहुत जल्द हक़ीक़त होने वाला है। मुझे पूरा विश्वास है आने वाले वर्षों में बिहार भारत की अगली बड़ी कहानी लिखेगा। आप सभी को बिहार दिवस की बहुत-बहुत शुभकामनाएँ। “हम बिहारी, सब पे भारी।”

I see many Indian institutions celebrating their alumni’s success in cracking the UPSC CSE. This is a remarkable individual achievement. However, why should an engineering or medical school take pride in it if the individual is unlikely to practise what they learned firsthand? 🤔

If I were 20 today, तो बड़े कामों से ज़्यादा ध्यान छोटे-छोटे कामों पर देता। क्यों? क्योंकि अपनी journey को पीछे मुड़कर देखता हूँ, तो एक बात बार-बार साफ़ होती है: छोटे काम ही बड़े दरवाज़े खोलते हैं। मैंने बहुत कम से शुरुआत की थी। Bombay की सड़कें ही मेरा college थीं। अख़बारों में metal prices देखना, दूसरों को deals करते हुए observe करना, और जहाँ लगता था जवाब मिल सकता है, वहाँ सवाल पूछ लेना। उन शुरुआती दिनों में न कोई बड़ी strategy थी, न कोई bold moves, बस वो काम थे, जिन्हें ज़्यादातर लोग ज़रूरी नहीं मानते। समय पर पहुँचना, meetings में calculator साथ रखना, एक भी appointment miss न करना, ऐसे छोटे-छोटे काम। ये छोटे काम रोज़मर्रा में दिखते नहीं थे। कई रातें ऐसी भी आईं, जब लगा: क्या इसका कोई फल मिलेगा भी? इसलिए जब कोई मुझसे पूछता है कि कुछ बड़ा करने का secret क्या है, तो मेरा जवाब हमेशा एक ही होता है: छोटे कामों पर ध्यान दीजिए, और देखिए कैसे बड़े दरवाज़े अपने आप खुलते हैं। यही simple habit आगे चलकर Vedanta की नींव बनी।

Today I was at a village called Taralaahi/Darbhanga in Bihar, accidentally took this photo while doing Reece for my Maithili film. I have to write about this. People love to talk about “bad education in Bihar.” They love stereotypes. They love headlines. They love judging from a distance. But this photo tells a different story. A classroom. All empty benches. No crowd. No noise. No “system”. Just one student… and one teacher. And yet the teacher has arrived. Not for attendance. Not for salary. Not for show. He is teaching because she believes teaching matters. I asked why single student, came to know that She had missed few classes and teacher obliged to finish those particular chapters. Having said this I am not saying things are perfect. This is also Bihar that rarely becomes viral: - dedication without resources - commitment without facilities - responsibility without applause We can criticise the system — and we should. But we must also recognize the people who are holding that system together with their will power. Bihar is also made of such teachers who keep showing up, even when the class is empty, even when the world has already given up.
