This video seems to sum up the irrationality of the GameStop thesis well. What are they missing? First, real hedge fund pros, the guys who have been doing this since the 1980’s would NEVER put on a position without defined losses. IOW a hedged position. And most would never get involved with a cult or meme stock. If you see “naked short” by a pro it’s somehow hedged. The guys at Melvin let their ego take them out, an amateur move according to the real hedge fund pros I’ve spoken with. Next, the pros will take both sides, they could have a long and short position at different prices via options. So all the volatility could increase the value of the position that’s going against them. Next, the real pros rarely short exclusively through shares. It’s often done by selling a call at X to collect premium and buying a call at Y to hedge your position. Next, the real pros don’t care if a price goes up or down, they want volatility, so by GameStop retail creating the vol it’s on net balance helping the guys they’re trying to hurt while the retail investors on net lose money. And if there are far more hedge funds making money on GME than losing money it’s not going to take down the system. The battle being waged is only in the minds of the people caught up in the hysteria. I could go on and on but this is the equivalent of Tiger Woods playing the guy in the video at golf. I can assure you, the guy in the video loses every time. Fighting against the corruption in the financial industry is an admirable cause, as was being against Putin invading Ukraine. But just bc he invaded Ukraine doesn’t mean you should impose sanctions if it hurts you more than it hurts him. Btw, If you want to make money trading spend less time on Reddit/Tiktok and more time reading Market Wizards.
