@fian was disappointing on SBS. Advocate for early repatriation of our citizens rather than defending the government's problematic travel ban by calling it "odd". Whom are they representing? So many Indian-Australians disagree.

The UK had 1000 per million new cases daily - no ban The US had 907 per million new cases daily - no ban India 225 per million new cases daily - travel ban and jail time. We have to call these new rules out for what they are – racist.

As an Aussie that has lived and worked in India for 4 years now I have never felt so far away from feeling Australian. I don't know how you can deny citizens to return home especially when there are hotel quarantines in place.

The Australian Government is actively considering fining #StrandedAussies $66,000 or sending them to jail for FIVE YEARS if they try to return to Australia from India. I thought Australia was all about looking after each other, but I guess I got that wrong? I feel numb.

Well, I've had Indian relatives ask me why the Australian Govt wants to jail Australian Indians returning home to Australia from India We already have an awful reputation overseas for the way we treat refugees. Now the world sees how we treat our own citizens #strandedAussies

Remembering these thoughts as an adult, I've always dismissed them as the product of an overactive childhood imagination. But the current Indian travel ban has me thinking that my childhood self knew just what white Australia was and remains capable of doing to its racial others.

During my first family visit to India when I was eleven years old, I spent a lot of time wondering 'what if they bring back the White Australia policy while we're away and don't let me back into the country?"

Racism runs so deep in Australia that banning Indian-Australians from returning home, with threats of fines and jail, may shock the world but comes naturally for the Morrison govt. Covid has come from the US, so surely a ban on US flights? Of course not. bbc.com/news/world-aus…

Remember during the bushfire disaster when these Indian Australians fed families who’d been made homeless and forced to flee the inferno. It’s very sad that their family members and compatriots are being refused re-entry to Australia now that the shoe is on the other foot.
