US fertility reached 1.57 last year, the lowest ever recorded, and the WSJ explanation is "uncertainty about finances, relationship stability, and the political climate" my great grandma had eleven children during the second world war, in a country being bombed, in a house with no running water, on rations. poor people have always had kids. the poorest people on earth right now still have kids and the financial excuse is a story we tell ourselves because it makes us feel good and the real one is unbearable the real mechanism is that we got rich enough to redefine children as an expense instead of the point. somewhere in the last fifty years the cultural goal inverted and a child stopped being what life is for and became a line item competing with the lifestyle. once you frame it that way the math never works, because the math isnt supposed to work. that's the point we are living in the richest moment in human history and we decided to use the surplus to buy ourselves out of the future. the most prosperous civilization that has ever existed is committing demographic suicide at the altar of personal optimization and comfort, and the official line is that we cant afford it the birthrate is a lagging indicator of a civilization that forgot why it was alive

A middle-aged @usairforce colonel went through a shoot down and a parachute drop, was severely injured, treated his own wounds, ran five miles in enemy territory, climbed a 7,000-foot mountain, radioed the proclamation, "God is good," and then holed up in a crevice in near-freezing temperatures for two days while his brothers and sisters came to rescue him. That's America; that's the American military; that's the United States Air Force.

Pretty interesting I've lost 300 followers here on X over the past 3 days -- my guess is by making observations or asking questions about developments of the Iran war It's an emotionally-charged topic, I get it And I do my best to chart a non-partisan course But that doesn't stop folks from ascribing an intent or a bias The interesting part is that half think I'm a war-cheering Trumper & half think I'm an America hating communist. And that both are comfortable hurling f-bombs (or worse) at me to express their displeasure of me not being on their "side" I guess that means I'm doing my job right of charting an independent course if so many are having trouble pigeon-holing me But it saddens me that rational respectful discussion is so hard to have over social media. Because that's all I'm trying to pursue here. I don't have the answers. That's why I'm putting questions out there, or an idea for folks to react to. I'm hoping that by mutual exploration of these important developments, we can learn from one another and perhaps see things a little more clearly together. Oh, well. While I might lose some followers for a while longer, I won't lose sleep over it. If any of my posts related to the developments of the war "trigger" you, then I apologize. It's not my intent. Though I'm happy if they cause you to think and invest a minute or two in composing a thoughtful reply. If you can do that in good faith and keep the insults out of it, I promise to read it and thoughtfully reply if I'm able. Fingers crossed this war ends soon and our biggest problems revert back to trying to predict the future of the economy & markets 🤞 And whatever you may think of me, I care about you all 🙂

The federal government’s workforce is shrinking at a historic pace: The federal government shed -18,000 jobs in March, down to 2.66 million, the lowest since 1966. This marks the 14th consecutive monthly decline. Since the beginning of 2025, the federal government has cut -352,000 jobs, reducing its workforce by nearly -12%. As a % of total employment, federal jobs are down to 1.67%, the lowest on record. By comparison, in the 1960s, this percentage averaged 4.2%. The federal workforce has never been this small.

@RohanJ_Markets @KobeissiLetter They only control the straight if they have money to pay for people to oversee it. Destroy their revenue capabilities, electricity generation and they won’t have the capability to control anything

BREAKING: Iran has delivered its highly anticipated "10-point" response to the US' "15-point peace plan." Iran's 10-point plan includes: 1. Guarantee that Iran will not be attacked again 2. Permanent end to the war, not just a ceasefire 3. End to Israeli strikes in Lebanon 4. Lifting of all US sanctions on Iran 5. End to all regional fighting against Iranian allies 6. In return, Iran would open the Strait of Hormuz 7. Iran would impose a Hormuz fee of $2 million per ship 8. Iran would split these fees with Oman 9. Iran to provide rules for safe passage through Hormuz 10. Iran to use Hormuz fees for reconstruction instead of reparations President Trump's "deadline" for a peace deal with Iran is 25 hours away.

@KobeissiLetter ✅ Relative peace in the Middle East ✅ Removing of sanctions ✅ Tolling the Strait for reconstruction fees and sharing these tolls with Oman This all seems fairly reasonable, nothing excessive and an offramp for both sides. But Trump won't agree.

@KobeissiLetter Legit question here… why liquidate corporate investment grade bonds when the their credit quality (and diversification if in an ETF) is arguably better than the US Government? Why are we not seeing a flight to safety in investment grade US corporates?

BREAKING: Investors sold -$5.35 billion of US investment-grade corporate bond funds in the week ending April 1st, the largest outflow since April 2025. This also marks the first outflow since November, and only 2nd over the last 12 months. As a result, the investment-grade corporate bond ETF, $LQD, fell -2.1% in March, the largest monthly decline in 11 months. Furthermore, US high-yield bond funds have recorded outflows for 8 consecutive weeks, while leveraged loan funds have posted outflows in 5 of the last 6 weeks. Global investment-grade and high-yield bond funds saw -$7.90 billion in combined outflows last week, the largest since April 2025. The credit market is under pressure.

Do you realize that boy is an Assyrian from Iraq? The Assyrians were ethnically cleansed and genocided by Muslims. There were 2 million Assyrian Christians in Iraq 20 years ago, today only 100k. Muslims did this. Stop blaming everything on Zionists and start holding Muslims accountable!

@LynAldenContact @TimTravisValue It doesn’t have to be cash, they just like keeping duration of the fixed income portfolio low. I think this is to preserve optionality if a rise in long rates causes or prolongs a hard insurance market like it did in 2022. $FFH.TO is similar in that way but with more leverage.

Since Berkshire is an insurer, it needs a lot of cash on hand, and so ratio charts tend to be more informative than nominal charts. Berkshire's cash amount as a share of enterprise value has averaged 24% over 20+ years, whereas today it's nearly twice that at 44%.

This movie is going to be insane… American WSO ejects over Iran and spends ~48 hours hiding in the mountains while the IRGC hunts him. We cover him with 24/7 air support until US Special Ops can get to him, only for their Plan A planes to get stuck on the rural airstrip we setup deep in Iranian territory. They blow up the planes so Iran can’t recover them, fly in 3 new ones for extract, and still manage to get everyone home alive. No man left behind. 🇺🇸
