Eyes Wide Shut conspiracy theories are so funny because it's like. The illuminati saw a rough cut and went like "fuuuck we gotta edit some of this out but they can get the gist of it. We can't ruin too much of the structure

“Slop” moved into the vocabulary so easily because it replaced “schlock,” which means the same thing, but East Coast Yiddish terms have fallen out of favor. “Slop” is very Old West / Frontier.

@KenLayne it’s got a connotation of melodrama and cheesiness that isn’t there with “slop”, which is often used to mean something insincere or without enthusiasm.

DEVIL IN A BLUE DRESS is maybe the only film I’ve personally seen in which Denzel doesn’t start as The Man so much as *a man* but slowly evolves into the former. It’s such a satisfying arc.

Mine is def DEVIL IN A BLUE DRESS, where he starts as a man simply trying to earn in post-WWII LA suddenly thrust into a world of white crime & conspiracy he is out of his depth with but then slowly toughens into a real noir detective Plus, this incredibly acted sex scene

piggybacking: obviously it's not true that interiority was invented in the 1900s, but what is true is that the interiority of ordinary people was made legible, both figuratively and literally, by the advent of mass print followed by mass literacy and this is his real objection

hard to imagine what the point of lying about something so thoroughly documented could be other than a pure show of dominance, like getting your ministers to agree that the moon is made of cheese just because you can

@Interrobang_2 @arvofart movies if you want. Celebrate his work even, but don't pretend he isn't a fascist at the end of the day. I have no illusions regarding Mizoguchi's horrendous politics. I still think his work as an artist is incredibly valuable.
