✈️ ADA Aircraft Integration & Flight Testing Centre — Puttaparthi
What It Is, What It Has & What Gets Tested
🏗️ THE LAND & INFRASTRUCTURE
350 acres total allocated by AP government — 150 acres directly adjoining the Puttaparthi runway for the complex itself, and 200 acres for a satellite office complex and residential township.
Runway extended to 10,000 feet — long enough to test a fully loaded combat aircraft — alongside a new ATC tower, navigation systems and meteorological support facilities.
A dedicated Local Flying Zone will be created in coordination with the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Ministry of Defence and the Indian Air Force — AMCA test flights won't share airspace with commercial traffic.
300 additional acres nearby are earmarked for private industry partners to set up aerospace and defence manufacturing facilities around the hub.
🔧 WHAT THE FACILITY WILL DO — PHASE BY PHASE
Phase 1 — Aircraft Assembly & Integration
Where AMCA airframes will be physically assembled and all systems bolted together for the first time. For a 5th gen stealth aircraft this is enormously complex — airframe, engine, radar, avionics, weapon bays, EW systems and stealth coatings all have to work as one integrated unit before the aircraft ever leaves the ground.
Phase 2 — Ground Testing
Before any flight, every system gets exhaustively tested on the ground:
🔹 Structural load testing — stress the airframe to its limits without flight risk
🔹 Engine ground runs — test the Kaveri Mk2 / GE-414 engine under controlled conditions
🔹 Radar & avionics integration — ensure AESA radar, EW suite and mission computers all talk to each other correctly
🔹 Weapon systems integration — test internal weapon bay doors, release mechanisms and fire control systems before live flight
🔹 Ejection seat & emergency systems testing
🔹 RCS (Radar Cross Section) measurement — critical for a stealth aircraft; shape, coatings and material of the airframe verified to meet stealth specifications
Phase 3 — Flight Testing & Certification
Flight testing for a 5th gen aircraft covers:
🔹 First flight & envelope expansion — gradually pushing speed, altitude and g-force limits
🔹 Supersonic performance testing — AMCA designed for Mach 1.8+
🔹 Stealth performance validation in real flight conditions
🔹 Avionics & sensor fusion testing — how well the pilot's systems picture holds up in real flight
🔹 Weapons separation testing — live release of bombs and missiles from internal bays
🔹 Electronic warfare system testing — jamming, radar warning and countermeasures in flight
🔹 All-weather & night operations certification
🔹 Air-to-air & air-to-ground combat mode validation
🤖 BEYOND AMCA — FUTURE USE
The facility won't sit idle between AMCA test phases. It will also be used for:
🔹 Future UCAV (unmanned combat aerial vehicle) development & testing
🔹 Advanced UAV / drone testing for military use
🔹 Next-generation indigenous aircraft programmes after AMCA
🔹 Private aerospace industry testing & certification work
Ecosystem around the hub expected to attract investments across avionics, precision engineering, propulsion systems, unmanned aerial platforms, advanced materials and defence electronics manufacturing.
🌍 WHY PUTTAPARTHI — THE STRATEGIC LOGIC
✅ Existing runway — gave ADA a head start vs greenfield
✅ Away from the congested airspace of Bengaluru / Hyderabad — safer for experimental flight testing
✅ Land availability — flat terrain, large parcels, low cost
✅ Close to DRDO / ADA / HAL ecosystem in the Bengaluru-Hyderabad corridor
✅ AP government's Defence & Aerospace Policy 4.0 — aggressive incentives and fast-track approvals
🔭 BOTTOM LINE
India currently tests combat aircraft at HAL's facility in Bengaluru and CEMILAC's certification centres — all heavily congested and shared.
This upcoming complex will serve as the PRIMARY assembly and testing site for the AMCA — India's fifth-generation stealth fighter.
A dedicated, purpose-built facility means AMCA development no longer competes for hangar space, runway time or airspace with Tejas, Dornier, helicopters and commercial traffic.
India's equivalent of what Edwards Air Force Base is to the US or Istres is to France.
