Just dropped my first UE plugin, it's for generic object pooling and has a few built in classes for things like sounds, vfx, meshes, projectiles etc - github.com/itsBaffled/BFO…

Games that ban players for toxic game chat are so lame, that is like half of the fun. @VALORANT lame asf.

@kweelungsin @ChShersh That would fall under what I meant by not being able to alias with a “using” but yeah, I could have been clearer

@kweelungsin @ChShersh Only useful when you have an insanely long type that you can’t just “using” the type definition. Trailing return types are a bad language addition imo, too far from the standard syntax.

@ChShersh A friend of mine suggested an interesting C++ style: auto f() -> int {}

@apchavan @seiko_dev dev.epicgames.com/documentation/… They’re actually beginning to do the opposite, std should be used where applicable but yeah, once upon a time ago, they were creating abstractions for little reason other than to be “UE” code instead of std lib code

@itsBaffled @seiko_dev Hey Jack, thanks for commenting! :) I see your opinion is right for using 'std' for simpler things like this & won't make much difference. But as we know just like for other purposes I think they want to streamline by not wanting #GameDevs to directly rely on 'std' namespace…

@OutoftheboxP I assume obviously you’re in debug configuration. Might be just a really chalk case where you need to rely on std::cout to log state but usually an ensure (__debugbreak) works in those rare spots, good luck anyway 🫡

@itsBaffled I will have to investigate more but it seems when I make this code block crash I get a delayed and compleltly weird callstack.

Early signs this feature is a bad idea: 1. The code needs to run before the EngineInit 2. The exposed getter is abused with const_cast to make it writeable 3. I am running in Debug configuration, I've set 3 breakpoints and none of them hit, however the value is set correctly

@SomeoneLew @t_looman It’s pretty good these days, they’ve done a lot to reduce the memory footprint. It’s still not great but it’s definitely workable these days and 10x the experience of VS with unreal engine I’d definitely recommend giving it another go, almost everyone I know prefers it

I have written a C++ setup guide for Rider and UE5. Including the errors you might run into during installation or first compiling your Unreal project. A few personal preferences were included…depending on how minimalist you like your code editors.

@80Level They should make use of latent actions instead of delegate bindings everywhere, creates a more succinct graph to follow

@LincolnMargison So you basically want custom HLSL nodes like materials (Left img) or custom modules like in Niagara (right img) but for blueprint? Idk, I’d rather stick to one medium when programming but I see how it could be useful in niche cases where BP is too verbose or it's a for loop

None of these are what I'm referring to though. Imagine blueprint except it is displayed as code (and could be typed if you wanted). So.. right click to search for nodes/functions. Click on one, drag for context relevant options, drag a variable into a function to add it as the input, so on.

In Unreal Engine we've got C++ or Blueprints, is there some technical reason we can't have something in between? Written code, ~instant compile time, but done in engine, which maybe gets properly converted/compiled when packaging? Like.. blueprint is just text at the end of the day isn't it? you can copy and paste it, so underlying it is just script text. Could that not just be formatted in a normal code way, still with the context sensitive lookups and such in engine? You could even gamify it a bit kinda like nodes if you wanted, where instead of typing in things when calling a function you drag some references into it etc.

This is like watching a baby’s first steps.. cute.. but ultimately clumsy and pathetic. Once you get into niche anime with dark nihilistic philosophy like Serial Experiments Lain, write back to me. Just know you might not be the same person you were before. I know I wasn’t..

@noinconsistency The game dropped almost 3 years ago… if you can’t afford to purchase a game an want to wait 3 years then that’s fine but others wouldn’t mind spending that. One night of eating out costs double that…
