Once upon a time, Bin Salman would have had no choice but to begrudgingly put up with UAE's violations, bullying, and transgressions. He desperately needed Bin Zayed to market him in Western capitals (Washington in particular). But times are now different. Bin Salman's relationship with Trump and Kushner (Israel) is increasingly independent of Bin Zayed, Iran is no longer the threat it once was, Qatar has kept the peace and has evolved into a solid ally, and Erdogan insists on Bin Salman's friendship and long term partnership. Bin Zayed is not as indispensable to the Crown Prince as he once was. The move to challenge Abu Dhabi remains fraught with risks, but it is not as dangerous as it once might have been.

December has been quite the month for the UAE: UAE ordered Pakistan's general Asim Munir to give weapons to Haftar in Libya, who is expected to then deliver them to Hemedti in Sudan (who is genociding the Sudanese population because Bin Zayed doesn't trust them to choose the 'correct' leaders in any elections). Asim Munir has reportedly complied. -------- UAE's Bin Zayed is bullying Bin Salman in Yemen as he equips and pushes the Southern Separatists to start taking territory in Hadhramout (Saudi's supposed "red line"). UAE is accelerating its bid to carve out an independent 'Southern state' that is expected to serve Abu Dhabi on the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait. The new 'state' will also be expected to protect the Israeli presence in Socotra as part of UAE's agreement with Tel Aviv whereby the latter lobbies Washington for full impunity for the former on foreign policy. Bin Salman cannot decide if Houthis or Islah ("Muslim Brotherhood") or the internationally-recognised Yemeni government he publicly backs are worse for him and is paralyzed by fears that he will empower these groups by reacting forcefully to UAE's aggression. -------- UAE secures Israeli 'recognition' for a political entity composed of some Somali tribes based in the northern parts of Somalia that are expected to act as transit workers for Ethiopia by providing the land-locked state access to the sea which UAE hopes to leverage with Addis Ababa to push Ethiopia to provide alternative routes for the UAE into Sudan and other parts of Africa (and squeeze Erdogan and Turkiye's relentless growth in influence). These Somali tribes will also be expected to act as transit workers for an Israeli presence on the Bab al-Mandab Strait to challenge any attempts to economically choke Tel Aviv over its genocide and extermination of Palestinians.
