Reflecting and acutely feeling this about today's society. On one hand it's incredible what GPT-4 can generate in a matter of seconds, yet it feels like we're losing something precious...the joy found in the process of creation. Dickens words from 1859 still ring true.

My late brother was a talented animator/illustrator (worked for Disney etc.) As my kids have grown up, they’ve asked questions about him, and I’ve always shown them his artwork or films that he worked on — for years this was enough to show them and others what made him so special — but as AI advances it will become less and less obvious. I’ve struggled with the promptification of Studio Ghibli today because I know the mental/emotional toll of decades spent perfecting his craft — a craft which is now being flippantly emulated en mass. There is a lot of nuance to this subject, and this is not lost on me, and I know it echoes technological revolutions in the past. I also recognize that the democratization of creativity can be a great thing for society. That said, for every positive change that the AI revolution brings, it will also claim many “victims” in various ways — for me that victim feels like my brother’s artistic legacy. I don’t exactly know why I’m sharing this — it’s terribly off brand. Maybe it’s to show that resistance or frustration with AI is not always some stubborn ill informed short-sighted fear of technology — it may just be an emotional response to change.

Every writer you’ll ever meet — I believe — is someone who found some solace or enjoyment at escaping reality from a young age and stumbled upon a structured way to continue to do so into adulthood. A skill that comes in handy these days.

Something about watching people light up when they talk about what truly moves them has become more beautiful to me than any conventional marker of success. There's this particular kind of aliveness that happens when someone drops out of their social script and into genuine enthusiasm - even for something society deems trivial. It's like watching someone's soul peek through their carefully constructed adult costume. Makes me wonder how much of our 'maturity' is just learned suppression of our natural vitality.
