every once in a while you get an idea that you shudder to think its path dependency of arriving in your head if you had made slightly different decisions you might never have thought of it

the nature of insights is that they seem obvious the moment you discover them. there are two factors that are being conflated: - the usefulness of the discovery - the difficulty of originating the discovery as only the usefulness of the discovery is self-evident, most people trivialize the difficulty ("i could've thought of that!") tilt-roller luggage bag we use today was only invented in 1987! we look at the bag and would say that design is obvious, but what we're actually saying is its design is obviously useful i originally thought this was a psychological bug in our evolution. now i realize it provides compounding benefits by minimizing the presumed investment it must've taken to discover, you can build on top as if it were your own idea, without paying a mental "royalty" to the original discoverer this leads to human beings being able to not only accept great new "obvious" ideas but freely create derivatives they can call their own p.s. its not without irony i realize this post itself now could be regarded as "obvious"

thesis for 2026: people are hungry for agency games when each minute of ordinary life feels like its dictated by invisible, powerful entities, you're playing your life "on rails" leading to predetermined, mediocre outcomes gen Z feels a restlessness wondering "is this life as its only ever going to be?" they see an anemic job market, compounding student debt, the same set of prepackaged experiences available to anyone willing to pay we witness this restlessness through an explosion of -ev gambles where people forcibly take their life off the rails, even if it means potential catastrophe even if bad outcomes occur, that negative feedback is confirmation that you've made a decision that is separate from the pack wsb, memecoins, gambling, prediction markets, fashionable entrepreneurship, onlyfans, influencer deification, dating for high status are all isomorphic games of the ravenous hunger for agency there are a few key facets that make for effective agency games: 1. asymmetric distribution of outcomes: few winners who win really, really, really big, vast majority of players lose 2. personal accountability: it's the player who makes the decision to play. when things go right, the player feels like a genius. when things go wrong, the player feels stupid. there is no third party to blame 3. presence (or illusion) of ability: there is some quality that the player feels more capable at the game compared to other players. this can be as illusory as born "luck" in a mathematically proven -ev game 4. extreme highs that decay quickly after a win: this is counter-intuitive but the feel of a win must not be enduring as otherwise the game becomes unplayable in subsequent rounds. you can witness this in depression among people who've made FU money who can no longer play the money game with thrilling stakes 5. historical precedence: there are widely circulated stories of the average person becoming exceptional through playing the game. it is a mix of jealousy, "rational" reasoning (if they won, why not me?), alien nature of power law returns that convince the player they deserve a win given enough investment 6. high status for winners, low status for losers: there is incredible social upside for being one of the few winners. anticipating this inversion of respect and admiration is one of the key payoffs that sustain players through losing sessions. "people think i'm a loser. wait till i win big and prove all those disbelievers wrong!" 7. authentic filtration of winners from losers: there must be few winners and there must be many losers. imagine a casino where players buy-in, win big, then when they go to cash out, they're told to surrender 90% of their winnings to give to the losers. in order for agency games to be effective, there cannot be a "safety net". the wins and losses must feel pure i'll be utilizing these principles in two key products in 2026 (@ethxy is the first). you should follow me (@j_eth_id) to see what i'm up to

My friend mistakenly sent mid 6 figs of USDC (basically owned by @Coinbase) to his @CoinbaseInsto Prime deposit address on Base, a chain wholly controlled by Coinbase. They are claiming they can’t recover it. This is not a contract address that is chain specific, they obviously have the private key, but they only accept USDC deposits on mainnet. The fact that they don’t support their own chain on Prime is laughable; the kicker is they have a recovery service for retail but not for Prime. They obviously can and should recover it.
