Two days left until the Covid Inquiry Vaccines report. Will it praise or criticise MHRA, the UK’s medicine regulator and safety manager. We gave the Inquiry significant evidence, mostly from FOIs, that MHRA is broken. Our evidence was ignored in the Public Hearings. Here’s a summary. MHRA: • approved the Covid vaccines without key safety testing • took manufacturers’ assessments of clinical trials deaths and serious harms at face value without independent verification • approved a different product to that tested in clinical trials without comparative comparative safety & immunogenicity data • did not measure DNA contamination in routine batch testing despite warnings • approved the vaccines without evidence about effect on transmission • didn’t conduct proper benefit/risk analysis for lower-risk groups (children, pregnant women, reproductive-age adults) • approved booster trials in children despite low benefit and unknown risks, breaching (in our opinion) the Helsinki Declaration • don’t have individuals with delegated authority to approve medicines; they approve drugs as a group and get clerical staff to sign off authorisation paperwork • don’t investigate all fatal Yellow Card reports • don’t have a written process for investigating any YCs • rely on statistical analysis of the numbers of YCs between different medicines to generate safety signals • are late spotting safety signals and so are slow to react • miss safety signals • accept that their YC database has lots of missing information (eg age, time-to-event, batch numbers, medical records) essential for assessing causation • lack real-time management information on YC follow-up rates, trends, or missing data • don't have a written process for causation assessment of YCs • take an average of 11 years to withdraw approvals for medicines on safety grounds • discontinued its Yellow Card Vaccine Monitor programme after only six months despite high adverse-event reporting rates • failed to act on wider population-level signals (excess deaths in working-age groups, rises in cardiac ambulance calls, long-term sickness, international myocarditis data) • have a passive approach to Coroners Reports and post-mortems; eg unaware of at least two Coroners citing Covid vaccines as cause of death • are not subject to independent safety audit • have no organisational separation between regulation and safety management • are largely funded by the industry they regulate • have revolving-door employment with pharmaceutical companies Did we miss anything ??!! The number of cancer deaths worldwide has more than doubled since the 1980s. Does that mean we're losing the fight against cancer? Not necessarily, because it depends on how you measure it. On this chart, you can see three ways to look at the same data. The red line shows the total number of cancer deaths. It has increased by about 120%, but this measure doesn't account for the fact that the world's population has also grown enormously over this period. Another approach is to look at the death rate: the number of cancer deaths divided by the total population. That's the brown line, called the crude cancer death rate. It has increased too, but much less — around 20%. But there's still a problem: the world's population has been getting older. Cancer is mostly a disease of old age, so even per capita, we'd expect more cancer deaths simply because there are more older people than before. That's where the method of “age standardization” comes in. It's a way of asking: what would the cancer death rate look like if the age structure of the population hadn't changed? The blue line shows this age-standardized rate: it's fallen by about 25%. At any given age, people are now less likely to die of cancer than they were in the 1980s. The same underlying data gives us three different pictures. The absolute number of deaths is up; the crude rate is up slightly; the age-standardized rate is down. None of these are inaccurate, but they answer different questions. Age standardization is one of the most important statistical methods for making sense of health data. Without it, population aging can hide progress or mask problems.
