This sounds cool. But wait. 400 diapers will last a family with a newborn approximately five weeks. The program will cost the state approx. $12.4 million this year alone. That money will be funneled through a company called Baby2Baby, which will then provide their branded diapers to 400 participating in hospitals (California has over 500 hospitals in total.) Meaning that instead of lowering taxes and letting families keep their own money to buy essentials like diapers, California takes their money, pumps it through a “nonprofit” that has overhead and whose CEO made $240,000 in 2024, to provide a “free” service available only in certain locations, and that you could have bought yourself for much cheaper.
FactPost@factpostnews

Gov. Gavin Newsom has announced California will be the first state in the nation to provide free diapers to newborns. Families will receive 400 diapers when discharged from the hospital.

Apparently, the Iowa DCI violating privacy laws to specifically target athletes at Iowa and Iowa State for gambling violations as part of a plot to gain political capital doesn’t count as major.
Dan Wetzel@DanWetzel

Texas Tech's $5 million transfer quarterback Brendan Sorsby has entered rehab as the NCAA investigates him for sports wagering. This is the first major modern gambling scandal for college football. It won't be the last. Column for @espn espn.com/college-footba…

Not letting this promo apply to existing customers and burying that fact 7 paragraphs deep in the fine print is bullshit. What a scam @DKSportsbook @AppleTV

Geno and Sid especially should get to play as long as they want here. People are so quick to kick superstars to the curb when their perceived impact diminishes - embarrassing. All the years where they could have gone to another team, earned a lot more money or had other potential Stanley cup runs - they gave up to commit to the Penguins organization, their teammates and the fans. They have both earned the right to stay. This goes for Letang too.
Penguins Jesus@PenguinsJesus

Between Cutch and this, my heart and brain really have been at war for a few months. On one hand, it can’t be a permanent nostalgia tour at some point we need to commit to the next generation and/or tank to get it. On the other, how do you kick out franchise icons?

TNT’s hockey coverage is head and shoulders better than ESPN, and it’s a shame that we are subject to bad play-by-play and muted crowd noise from ESPN when TNT’s coverage exists.

We've now had multiple reporters come out and say Swalwell's behavior was an open secret since at least 2017. So no, this is not a testament to the power of investigative reporting. If anything, it is a failure of investigative reporting. @brianstelter, I'm sorry, but this is a really bad take that suggests you might be too in love with the media you cover, and you have lost the ability to be critical of it unless it is right-wing. We've literally had local beat reporters now say this has been known since Swalwell was on a city council in 2010 and CNN reported in 2017 about a "California congressman" and never mentioned his name. Don't be so in love with the press that you can't recognize this is a spectacular failure of investigative journalism. If the press had done its job tenaciously, a lot of women would not have been victims of Swalwell. Instead, what happened was the Democratic Party spoonfed journalists here at the end to get Swalwell out of the race.
