My fear with shortening games has always been limiting the impact of the bench. I know most fans would be fine mostly watching starters but aside from being a union issue, I think shortening rotations this much messes with development and makes roster-building too star-driven.

Make the games 40 minutes. 8 x 82 / 48 =13.667 That’s the equivalent number of games you would reduce the schedule by. Without breaking arena leases. Works for college. Works for international. Works for the WNBA. AND. If you looking at tv and streaming ratings, the less the actual playing time for a televised game, the bigger the ratings. Ie, the less time fans have to focus on a game, the more they enjoy watching it on tv

@LegendaryPace The Mavs didn't tank for a better pick, they ranked to keep their protected pick. They also didn't control their destiny for the playin and wouldn't have made it had they won those two games. They needed OKC to lose to a resting Grizzlies team.

The worst instance of tanking I’ve seen was the Mavs bowing out of the play-in so they could be in the lotto.
Funnily enough, the solutions Silver is offering would only incentivize this type of tanking more.

I've seen this point made a lot and it's an important question for this kind of "fix," but I really don't think any franchise would prefer being 1 of 22 (24 post expansion) with a shot at the top pick over advancing in the playoffs. *That's* the point where incentives flip.

It will be funny to watch Silver squirm when there's a 4-5 matchup where both teams know they have no shot against the juggernaut who awaits them in round 2 and there's like a 2% chance at a Wemby-level prospect if they lose, so both teams rest their starters for Game 7.
