The debate about Clavicular boils down to one question: What does it mean to be Jewish? Yes, we’re losing the PR Battle, but do we—as Jews—sell our souls to win the PR Battle? We recognize people hate us, but does that mean we have to change? Absolutely not. They’ll hate us either way, so we must not change. Again, we can’t change who we are just to placate larger society and social media. Worse though, this instinct that we have to subsume our values at the altar of social media is an easily falsifiable premise disproven by one man: Ben Shapiro. Ben Shapiro has sold out every single one of his campus tours and talks for the last decade. Campus tours. As in, for young people. The same people Clavicular reaches and influences. Exposure to Israel can be valuable, yet it should not come at the cost of blurring moral lines. If someone publicly glorified Hitler before millions, any redemption should be at least as public as the offense. Israel’s story is strong enough that it doesn’t need to be told through every influencer, especially those whose past conduct has deeply wounded the very people Israel exists to protect. Engagement is worthwhile, but it should be paired with accountability.

The backlash is just fake accounts. Fine, I’m not. I found the whole thing degrading, humiliating, and astonishingly poorly thought through and executed. It came across as amateurish, and worse desperate. I can forgive good intentions gone wrong. I can’t forgive the doubling down. The inability to simply say, “We got this wrong,” has turned a mistake into a self-inflicted embarrassment.
