It is incredibly challenging to celebrate much with the ongoing conflict and suffering in our region. With mixed emotions, I share that our deal with e& and Uber is officially closed, meaning all agreements have been signed and regulatory approvals obtained. Yesterday marked Day 1 of Careem’s Chapter 3! The events of the last two months are an unfortunate reminder of our region’s vulnerability. I sincerely believe that we, at Careem, have the opportunity and the responsibility to build a hugely impactful institution that contributes to a more prosperous and peaceful region. The journey will be challenging, but with the right intentions, passion and hard work, we will build one of the largest drivers of economic growth for our people iA. I am deeply grateful for the trust and determination that made this deal possible. Without Uber’s commitment and support to the region, this wouldn’t have been possible. Without e&’s ambitious vision and trust, this wouldn’t have been possible. And without the incredible commitment of countless colleagues at Uber, e& and Careem for over a year, this wouldn’t have been possible. Careem remains a labor of love and passion, and it is just getting started. Yalla Chapter 3!

Can someone please explain to me the Pakistan government's mind numbing & relentless obsession with bringing Paypal to Pakistan? Why is this the beacon of hope vs fixing the infrastructure necessary to improve payments in the country?

To think clearly, we must learn to differentiate between information that is useful, and that which is unnecessary. Insight shared from Stillness Is the Key by Headway app headway.onelink.me/9USK?af_web_dp…⁡_adset=quote⁡_ad=stillness-is-the-key

It's surprising how the world has somehow agreed on a common spec for these bottles while we can't decide on a common standard for electrical plugs around the world. These bottles perfectly fit any dispenser with no leaks or issues.

@AbdulRehman0292 Pre covid, Lahore was blessed with 2 startups, Airlift and Svwl. Both offered air-conditioned first classes busses with seats reserved in advance, digital payment, live tracking of the bus, etc. Services were so good that ppl, incl me, parked their cars saving 90% & pref them.

World Bank report says Karachi (a city of 20Mn+) needs 15,000 buses. How many do we have: only 1029‼️ When will we 🇵🇰🇵🇰 understand the importance of public transport - Public transport is a great equalizer and promotes social class mobility - Cheaper & safer than private transport - Less impact on climate - Will reduce oil imports & improve value of PKR

When I was in high school, my dad closed a $2 BILLION sale (about $4.5 billion in today’s dollars). It was the largest deal in the history of his industry. Nearly 35 years later, I still think about the story of how he closed it every time I’m in a sales meeting. At the time, my dad worked for a hazardous waste remediation business that helped manage, among other things, landfill waste. One of the major industries they served was auto manufacturing and my dad developed a relationship with one of the biggest players. The word went out that this manufacturer was bidding out a massive, long term agreement for landfill waste management. It was a career making opportunity. My dad worked his way to the VP who was responsible for the project and positioned his company to be one of the bidders. The day came for my dad to make the pitch. He sat in the VPs office nervous as can be. But before he could give his presentation the VP said, “I want to run something past you.” He went on to explain there was another option the company was exploring. Rather than hiring a third party to manage this project, they could manage it internally. He paused and asked my dad what he thought. Sheepishly, my dad replied, “That’s actually a good idea and I think it could work for you.” The VP nodded, asked my dad to give his pitch, and the meeting ended. My dad left gutted. Why would he have told this VP they should manage it internally and not buy from him? Because, it was the truth. He had lost a sale but kept his integrity. And that had to be enough. A few weeks later, he got the call that they had been awarded the contract. Needless to say, he was shocked. To celebrate, he took the VP to dinner. During the meal, the VP opened up. Dave, do you know why I awarded you this deal? I had 7 companies bid on this proposal. In each of the pitch meetings, I presented them with the option for us to do it ourselves. That option was my idea. I already knew it would work. But the other 6 people immediately started firing off reasons why it wouldn’t. You were the only one who told me the truth. Today, I’m the one sitting across from the prospective customer. When I am, there are three things I always remind myself of: 1 - You can never assume you know why a prospect is asking you a question or sharing a certain piece of information. Ask instead of assuming. 2 - If you’re willing to be honest with a prospect, even when it goes against your best interests, it inspires trust. People buy from people they trust. 3 - At the end of the day, you may lose a sale but still have your integrity intact. And that’s always enough. I may never land a $2 billion deal, but I’ll never forget the lessons I learned from a man who did. *** I'm David and I write about being more thoughtful as a spouse, parent, and business leader. A 22-year-old follower recently messaged me asking for career advice. Here are the 5 pieces of advice I shared: 1. Swallow the Frog: This is one of the greatest "hacks" to get ahead early in your career. Observe your boss, figure out what they hate doing, learn to do it, and take it off their plate. Easy win. 2. Do the "Old Fashioned" Things Well: There are simple things that still stand out. Look people in the eye, do what you say you'll do, be early, practice good posture, have a confident handshake. It sounds silly, but these things are all free and will never go out of style. 3. Work Hard First (& Smart Later): It's in vogue to say that working smart is all that matters. Wrong. If you want to accomplish anything meaningful, you have to start by working hard. Build a reputation for hard work—take pride in it. Then you can start to build leverage to work smart. 4. Build Storytelling Skills: World-changing CEOs aren't the smartest or most talented in their organizations. They are exceptional at: (1) Aggregating data and (2) Communicating it simply & effectively. Data in, story out. Build that skill and you'll always be valuable. 5. Build a Rep for Figuring It Out: Early on, you'll be given a lot of tasks you have no idea how to complete. There's nothing more valuable than someone who can just figure it out. Do some work, ask the key questions, get it done. People will fight over you. Embrace those 5 pieces of advice and I guarantee you'll stand out and be on the right track. If you enjoyed this or learned something, follow me @SahilBloom for more in the future.
