When I worked at Macy's back in the 80's, people who worked there raised families on what they made. It was their career. I remember the guy in electronics retired after 30 years, and my boss in the cash office did the same. The guys who worked in the suit department did very well for themselves. Despite that, the store profited greatly every year, and we were given a beautiful Christmas party in appreciation. What changed in this country? When did it become nearly impossible to support oneself at a job that didn't require a degree or technical school?

@jasonfried @dhh Gosh, having you guys on our tiny podcast to chat about your business relationship would be a dream come true.
We've been fans of rework, idhtbcaw, remote, and everything in between.
My business partner (work wife; you know ;) and i are celebrating 12 years!

@sampittko @dhh That would be a fun podcast to do, but someone appropriate would have to invite us on to do it.

I wanna understand the duo @jasonfried & @dhh more. How do they complement each other etc. what are the dynamics of their relationship. Is this even possible? Any interesting podcast/video to listen to/watch?

@jasonfried @indiesaasgrowth So true. The subscription method scares me because of the power stripe and PayPal have. 50% up front; 50% 90 days later (for the slacker clients) or when work is completed seems to work well.
If over 100k total project cost, split into 3-4 payments for sure.
English

I think it actually comes well before billing. Client selection is a big part of it. Who are you working for? Clients hire you, but you hire clients too.
But more practically, get paid more frequently. Get a good chunk up front, and then get paid small chunks as you deliver small chunks of work.
English

Don't get tied up. Move on. Take the loss as experience. Get paid incrementally as you deliver work, don't deliver in big chunks. Those are the lessons, not suing.

A client took 4 weeks of design and development work, pushed it live in Webflow, removed my access, and disputed a refund for all the work completed during this time. I'm not being ridiculous for seeking litigation due to the fact they literally set the site live, right?

Kids-based design is always such a fun pivot away from more "normal" website building. Loved building this one: americasgreatstories.org
