@shallit43 @mattwridley @DailyMail @theCCCuk Pointing out what you consider a conflict as some equivalency is so typical of the alarmists. Unfortunately it doesn't address the very valid and extensive points he raised about the severely flawed model used by alarmists.

In my @DailyMail essay on the @theCCCuk's new report, I point out that they have a vested interest in exaggeration. "Between the moment when these climatecrats wake in the morning and the moment they lay their overworked brains to rest on feather pillows at night, they have one all-consuming ambition: to maximise their own budget. They achieve this goal by being as alarmist as possible. Imagine if they found evidence that climate change was no big deal or even good news: would they want to publish this? Of course not. It would be disastrous for their (taxpayer-funded) income. The committee has never produced a report on global greening: the remarkable 15-20 per cent increase in green vegetation on the planet over the past four decades, caused mostly by carbon dioxide emissions. Nor do its members talk about falling deaths from cold weather anywhere near as much as they do about the smaller number of deaths from hot weather. Good news for us, in short, is no news for them.

@jj691102 @illiquid__ @paulg Last I looked that was nowhere. The urban areas that meet that population requirement have too much built up in between to make the right of ways and collision safety cost effective

@illiquid__ @paulg The technical "sweet spot" for HSR competitiveness is a corridor of 400–600 km connecting two metropolitan areas with a combined population exceeding 5–10 million, where the terrain allows for sustained speeds 300 km/h to maintain travel time below 3 hours.

@mattwridley There is far more than a smidgen of doubt about a source other than lab release. Yet that hasn't deterred those (like Fauci and government agencies who want this to go away) from endorsing it.

Various angry people don't like this lecture. Some think any smidgen of doubt is enough to rule out a lab leak. Others are cross that I don't endorse speculative theories that it was a bioweapon, or made in America. A lab leak is highly likely but of course I don't know exactly how it happened and don't think it much helps to speculate about that.
Matt Ridley@mattwridley

In my lecture at @NIH, at the invitation of @NIHDirector_Jay, I explained why I changed my mind from thinking the lab leak theory of covid origins was unlikely to thinking it was almost certainly true. Please watch and assess the evidence yourself. videocast.nih.gov/watch/244438a5…

Remember this is exactly the opposite of what all polite opinion expected. In the early 2010s I was almost alone at least in the UK in saying the shale revolution was big news. Flash in the pan said all the energy “experts” and energy editors. Some flash, some pan.
Michael A. Arouet@MichaelAArouet

The US is energy independent. It can do whatever it wants Europe sacrificed its economy, relevance, and foremost geopolitical security at the altar of the green religion. It will get really nasty now. Don't blame Trump, you did it to yourself. Blame your left-green politicians.

@handre No, they got the message right. Doing nothing gives them no credit. Doing something even if it fails shows empathy and effort. That wins elections because you can blame others for the problem and take credit for trying to fix it.

The 1920-21 depression was arguably more severe than 1929's initial crash - unemployment hit 19%, industrial production collapsed 32%, and wholesale prices plummeted 37%. Yet this economic catastrophe has been virtually erased from mainstream economic education because it demolishes the British pedophile John Maynard Keynes' narrative that government must intervene to save capitalism from itself. President Harding did the unthinkable by modern standards: absolutely nothing. No stimulus packages, no bailouts, no monetary expansion, no public works programs. Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon even advocated letting failing businesses liquidate, arguing that inefficient capital allocation needed to be purged from the system. The Federal Reserve, still learning its role, largely stayed out of the way. The result? Complete recovery in just 18 months - one of the fastest economic recoveries in American history. Markets cleared, prices adjusted, inefficient businesses failed, and productive capital found new uses. Compare this to the 1930s when Roosevelt's alphabet soup of interventions turned a correction into a decade-long depression, or 2008 when bailouts preserved zombie banks and malinvestment. The 1920-21 episode proves that free markets self-correct rapidly when government doesn't interfere with the natural healing process. Politicians learned the wrong lesson though - they concluded that doing nothing doesn't win elections, even when it works perfectly.

When Biden refused to enforce immigration law, we were told that states couldn’t enforce those laws because it was a federal function. Now, when Trump is trying to enforce federal immigration law, these same people say it’s fine for states to obstruct and sabotage the carrying out of this same federal function.

@mattvanswol And how is it going to get fixed? Fraud has followed federal funded social and health programs like bees to honey. The common ingredient is these are all local issues being funded by federal money and managed by local officials whose goal is to expand it. Get the feds out!

@RARohde @MatthewWielicki Interesting to see the density of reporting stations over heavily populated areas. That means that reports on the temp changes of the planet and comparing it to temperatures going back 1000s of years heavily weighs urban areas vs unpopulated open space. Bias anywhere here?

@MatthewWielicki In 2024, this region recorded 6,165,398 temperature observations from ships & buoys. The region also had 246 active weather stations on Pacific Islands, and a further 7,398 stations in North America, Asia, & Australia. Lastly, this area is ~1/3 of the Earth's surface, not half.

@TonyClimate You forget that companies set their own prices and when faced with competition or higher costs they look at ways to lower those prices. So while an importer may pay a higher duty, the company may and often does, lower the price to offset this effectively paying the duty.
