I joined duolingo ~10 years ago, back when we could fit the entire company in one room above a sports bar in Pittsburgh, PA. Back then, I could get Luis’ attention by reaching across my desk and tapping him on the shoulder. Things are a little different these days. Today, we have 800+ employees in 6 offices around the world working on developing the best education and making it universally available to 113 million+ monthly learners. So Luis and Severin decided to write a handbook explaining not just how we build great products, but how we’ve built a great company. But this isn’t just for new employees. Just like our products, we wanted the book to be available to everyone — so we released it publicly.

The worst advice to give a young person is to move to Austin or Miami. The people telling you to risk your career didn't take the same risk: they lived in San Francisco when they were in your shoes starting out. When you are already successful, you can live anywhere. You have the network and resources. But crucially, you take the learnings of the cities you've lived in with you. Dave Chappelle can live in rural Ohio now. And David Sacks can move to Austin. But you are not them (yet 😊) Silicon Valley is not trying to be a "left leaning tech capital". It's just the tech capital. I know people all over the political spectrum here. Creating a right wing tech capital, pinned to an ideology, will always be ideology first, not tech first. So it'll never be a tech capital. San Francisco has given me everything. And on top of that it's such a world class city. You're truly lucky if you get the opportunity to move here.
