30 RCTs, 20,000 patients, one clear finding: we've been thinking about obesity treatment wrong. It's not surgery vs. drugs buta toolkit. Tirzepatide changes the game. Time to design trials combining both approaches, the way it is done in oncology onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ob…

82% of Americans don’t know that @Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Medicare is launching a program to expand access to obesity medications. New polling from @ObesityAdvocacy shows strong demand for better access to care. Part D plans must sign up to be a part of the Medicare BALANCE model by April 20. obesitycareadvocacynetwork.com/news/medicare-…

OCAN member, @ConscienHealth, highlights a key misinterpretation in a recent @Bloomberg article regarding @CMSGov’s BALANCE model. While the article suggests the model would cost insurers billions, a study published in @JAMANetwork  finds the opposite—sharing that the model would generate savings to offset the cost of treating up to 3.6 million additional Medicare beneficiaries. "Since forever, we have left obesity untreated. So it progresses and produces a cornucopia of other chronic diseases. But health plans all over the world – and especially in the U.S. – would rather stall on paying for obesity treatment today and let bills pile up down the road for heart, liver, kidney, endocrine, musculoskeletal, and oncologic diseases." Med News: In March, more than 50 US medical schools committed to boosting nutrition training under a new HHS initiative. Experts welcome the push but say competencies should be evidence-based and realistic. ja.ma/4mcakUv

Our relationship with food is complex, and the signals our bodies and minds send us can sometimes feel a bit tricky to navigate. Hunger is your body’s biological need for energy, while appetite is the desire to eat influenced by emotions, environment and habits. Learning to recognize the difference can help you respond more intentionally and make more mindful choices. Read more now: bit.ly/3PSpCRY

Bariatric surgeons should strongly consider Obesity Med certification. You need 30 hours of CME from an ABOM.org approved course. Consider this Pennington online course PBRC.edu/BOSS @ASMBS @NeilFlochMD @metabolic_knife @JaimePonceMD @IfsoSecretariat
American Board of Obesity Medicine@ABOMcert

More than 500 surgeons are already certified in #obesitymedicine. If you are a bariatric surgeon interested in learning more about how the field can complement your current practice, this is a great starting point.

The AI scribe will revolutionize healthcare as it will: 1. increase the accuracy and efficiency of the healthcare visit 2. Increase the amount of patients that can be seen 3. Increase revenue and bottom lines 4. Alleviate physician shortages 5. Decrease insurance profits as there will be more patient visits 6. Improve quality of care
JAMA@JAMA_current

#AI scribe adoption across 5 academic centers was associated with modest reductions in EHR and documentation time, plus a slight increase in weekly visit volume, especially for primary care and female clinicians. ja.ma/3NzDzUo

I want to thank everyone today for the texts and support today. On my fourth attempt, I was elected by my peers to be the next Vice President of the @ASMBS, a group of tireless surgeons and integrated health professionals dedicated to treating metabolic disease with the best treatment for it -- bariatric surgery. I want to thank my good friends Matt Brengman and Colleen Kennedy for a great race. I look forward to working with them and all of the great people on the Board of Directors for the next 5 years. I could not have done this without the 4 long years of support of my partners at Prisma Health, especially my boss, former ASMBS President Shanu Kothari. But most importantly, I want to thank my wife, Jean Scott, who has been tirelessly holding down the homefort for at least 12 years of ASMBS work, sacrificing some of her career to boost mine; my children Addison Scott and Caroline Scott, who are beginning to understand why dad was always out of town; and my parents, for their continued encouragement. To my friends, both new and old: let's pull out the guitars, catch up at the next meeting, and figure out how we are going to take the next step forward to help our patients and our membership in the years to come.
