This is a very "name one" situation, and they cant even name one Which is fine because it was just supposed to be fun! The best ones have figurative language and that's as far as they go linguistically. And they dont need to be more than that to have their own value

I dont have a "man it depends" relationship with fanfic, it is always worse than litfic I can enjoy a hobby without haggling for prestige, not every hobby is elite. Sometimes its just fun and sometimes it stops becoming fun when the consumers get too insecure about it

@midwest_it_girl as a rom reader half of me knows its just marketing but my other half hates the underlying misogyny that this is all women are capable of reading and all else is for boys. the majority of what i read is romance b/c i love it but i hate how others may view it as all i CAN read :/

@jeronicami @alyzaliu 'you can't criticize fic bc it's a hobby done for free' Yeah, they need to grow thicker skin, because anything that is published for public consumption is open to scrutiny by default. Just because someone does it for free doesn't make the work beyond reproach or above criticism.

@livfreelivrich @alyzaliu you see writers claiming their works deserve to be treated like publit? i believe you, i've just usually only seen that come from their audience - if anything most writers i see go heavy on the 'you can't criticize fic bc it's a hobby done for free' which tbf has its own flaws

I think the truth is in the name (fan fiction). They are people who are passionate about an I.P. and want to play around with it.

@livfreelivrich @alyzaliu i've really never seen this desperation for validation coming from fic writers. for the most part fic writers (especially the good ones) read broadly and are aware of what fic is and isn't (like OP). this largely comes from people who only read fic and want to feel good about it

I see the fanfic vs. books argument crop up every now and again, and as a fanfic writer I'm baffled by it because it used to be a very common idiom on the internet that 90% of fanfics were pure steaming garbage, and I genuinely don't know what happened to change that perception

@akahellcat_ i think people underestimate what a skill it is to make readers care about totally original characters from the ground up. most fics coast on pre-vested interest in a ship that the writer doesn't need to earn. it's like finding every boring detail about your crush fascinating

I don't know why this take makes me a little sad but it does. It reads like you don't care about writing/voice/plot, that it's just something you put up with to get more of characters you already love with & that it wouldn't hold up if it were brand new characters with everything
