The Executive Director of the African Institute for Development Policy, Dr Eliya Zulu, has commended the Malawian media for fulfilling its role as the fourth estate, noting that this is critical to advancing good governance in a democratic society. Dr Zulu made these remarks during the commemoration of World Press Freedom Day and the awards ceremony hosted by the Media Institute for Southern Africa Malawi. In his address, he challenged the media fraternity to move beyond promoting transparency towards strengthening accountability. He emphasised the need for journalists to go beyond headlines by consistently following up on stories to ensure that investigative reporting not only informs the public but also drives response and action. “There has been significant progress in enhancing transparency on a number of topical issues, which has increased public awareness. However, the media can do more; of course with support from other accountability and law enforcement institutions” he said. AFIDEP is expected to present the Best Journalist Award later in the evening.
