approaching evals from 1st principles, in theory if the task isnt super technical then writing and understanding goldens shouldn't be either.

Little trick for harness devs that has worked nicely for me, when i need to inject important “pushed” information mid conversation, i create a fake tool call request and result for the pull version of that thing. Like get_modified_files, or get_chat_notifications. Agents seem to trust tools more than injected system messages.

They are rebalancing their talent / people to an ai first strategy. And along the way they are including a general RIF that’s probably been long overdue. Just like covid companies will take the cover of ai to do things they should have been doing incrementally every year for the last decade.

Humans + AI is a win win. People still have meaningful jobs. Orgs can do more and better work. The alternative sounds too close to societal collapse for my taste. TL;DR: the orgs that figure out the human + AI combo are going to eat the ones that didn't. /fin

Orgs are laying people off "because of AI" and I (and the entire industry) need to talk about how insane all of this is. I build AI tools. I like AI. This isn't an anti-AI rant. This is an anti-stupidity rant. Buckle up. Spicy takes galore! 🧵1

@bettersafetynet I suspect the erosion of humans will not progress in a linear fashion, rather it will be a step-wise sort of deletion of jobs interspersed with period of hyperbolic replacement.

Are destructive actions all we should care about? Agents can do a lot of damage without deleting things and it’s time to rethink that frame.

We need to be having a conversation about monopoly power and verticalization of the AI Labs. This is a new but not entirely unique situation for software and industry in general (antitrust has been used against microsoft, google, apple etc). In the past there would have been a vocal part of community asking for labs to draw a line in the sand on where they will and wont compete with their enterprise / platform customers across all industries. The labs have been preaching bout exceptionalism and how they are no mere regular tech startups, well okay maybe we started treating them like that as well. If they want to be geopolitical/economic actors then its time the normies started playing politics back at them. When i talk to people that are still in sf they all have a fait accommpli about the impending wave of job losses and new turning of society and the economy. This is frustrating as if the tech community does not start to influence the debate from inside the house, particularly about what is and isnt fair game by the big labs then the only opposition will come from outside in the form of the burn the data centers crowd. That we can all agree is not going to be good for anyone.

i'm all for going further to open this up as a broader ethics debate on how the industry should operate in the ai age. for the last few decades it was all is fair in love and war as copying largely didn't work, but maybe that needs to change. just today OpenAI released something that clearly copied a ton of startups that were likely their api customers and everyone the timeline just cracks the '100s of startups are dead' meme.
