The evidence usually cited for restricting legal immigration comes in three classes: 1) Data about places other than the US. 2) Data about a group of people who have been here for centuries. 3) Anecdotal bulshytt.

NEWS: Popehat @Popehat, aka attorney Ken White, has been permanently banned from Bluesky, apparently for a post in which he suggested there was a moral upside to Elon Musk’s death. The Bluesky body politic, meanwhile, is losing its mind over this. Popehat is one of their heroes.

Leftists are coorect to recognize: "We have the votes and the legal mechanism required to secure a material benefit for our constituents at the expense of people who are not our constituents. Downstream knock-on effects, while maybe bad, can be further weaponized in our favor."

Market liberals are earnestly trying to convince leftists to oppose rent control by appealing to leftist principles, in vain. Rent control is bad because it is offensive to property rights, hurts productive people, and makes us all poorer—things the left doesn't care about!

"they ended up there because it helped capitalist undercut prevailing working class wages"
Kurt Andersen@KBAndersen

@sjc6254 Yes our immigration policy is incoherent. No the 300,000 Haitians here under this program don't "live in one town." 12-15,000 live in Springfield, Ohio, and make up around a quater of the population. They ended up there because there was a severe labor shortage that they solved,

This has to be facetious. But if not, then I weep for the future. Well, laugh rather than weep, but still… (HT Angela Collier on Bluesky. [Mention of Bluesky and a link to Substack: visibility of this post must be nil, like a foggy morning in SF.]) inpreparation.substack.com/p/opinion-i-wa…

Things like recycling and lowering your carbon footprint are personal responsibility propaganda campaigns to shift the burden of climate change and destroying the environment away from corporations and onto consumers.

the idea of a “carbon footprint” was invented by fossil fuel companies to shift responsibility from corporations to individuals. you driving your car isn’t the problem, colonial corporatism is.

Reminder: The author of the 14th amendment’s citizenship clause literally said aliens should not become citizens just because they were born on the soil of America before it was voted on.

@iowahawkblog If she were on the City Council or even the State Legislature that would make sense but she's in Congress. The voters sent her to Congress to get her out of town.

I have arrived at a sad conclusion that It is entirely possible that without legal immigrants from communist countries, United States would be communist by now.

This rhetorical trick is another example of, “pretending not to understand.” I understand that liberals think that being born in the country is a magical transforming process by which you become an American, but when we say immigrants, we of course mean their kids and grandkids, too.

the FDR "master statesman" myth dies at Yalta. picture it: a dying man, drugged on his own vanity, sitting across from Joseph Stalin and deciding the play is to charm the dictator while needling his oldest ally. FDR literally bragged that he teased Churchill to Stalin's face to get the old man to "thaw." he ganged up on the one leader who actually shared his values to flatter the one running a gulag. it worked about as well as you'd expect. Stalin smiled, signed a promise of "free elections" in Poland, then installed a puppet regime before the ink dried. FDR went home calling it a triumph. within two years Poland, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria were all communist dictatorships. he handed Stalin half a continent and treated Churchill like the problem. "played" is generous. he paid for the privilege
Praise of Folly@PoFPodcast

@EchoesofWarYT Also, FDR before Yalta: “I think that if I give him (Stalin) everything that I possibly can and ask nothing from him in return, noblesse oblige, he won’t try to annex anything and will work for a world of democracy and peace.” What a rube.

@xwanyex You are responding to an argument that is identical to a common argument for having more children. This attitude might explain why birth rates have crashed.

This kind of rhetoric only ever strengthens my resolve against immigration, because what it demonstrates is that immigration is a special kind of issue unlike all others in that it fundamentally changes the composition of the country in a way that snowballs and leads the people who came as immigrants, and those people who marry and employ them, and so on, to be even more committed to the project than before, because now they’ve wrapped up a significant portion of their personality in support of immigrants. This makes this issue unlike any other. It’s not at all like debating property taxes or whatever.
I aint got no towtruck dumbass@thefrog1394

@xwanyex No, man. It’s because these “foreigners” are our best friends, wives, co-workers. To be against immigration is to wish my childhood friends and their entire families had never come. To wish family members hadn’t been born.

I don’t entirely understand why we need so many data centers but the entire anti-data centers argument stinks to high heaven of the same scaremongering tactics that killed American nuclear power expansion in the 70’s and 80’s so I’m therefore pro data centers
