NEWS: Popehat @Popehat, aka attorney Ken White, has been permanently banned from Bluesky, apparently for a post in which he suggested there was a moral upside to Elon Musk’s death. The Bluesky body politic, meanwhile, is losing its mind over this. Popehat is one of their heroes.

Leftists are coorect to recognize: "We have the votes and the legal mechanism required to secure a material benefit for our constituents at the expense of people who are not our constituents. Downstream knock-on effects, while maybe bad, can be further weaponized in our favor."

Market liberals are earnestly trying to convince leftists to oppose rent control by appealing to leftist principles, in vain.
Rent control is bad because it is offensive to property rights, hurts productive people, and makes us all poorer—things the left doesn't care about!

@sjc6254 Yes our immigration policy is incoherent. No the 300,000 Haitians here under this program don't "live in one town." 12-15,000 live in Springfield, Ohio, and make up around a quater of the population. They ended up there because there was a severe labor shortage that they solved,

A rent freeze is almost certainly a net bad, and likely to cause construction to decrease. People built stabilized housing under the assumption they were supposed to weigh factors fairly, and the Rent Board ignored all the data it’s supposed to consider. Thousands of stabilized units are still built yearly. We should incentivize people to build more. These apartments have been kept under inflation for a decade now. A full freeze takes things too far. I hope the courts require otherwise.

This rhetorical trick is another example of, “pretending not to understand.” I understand that liberals think that being born in the country is a magical transforming process by which you become an American, but when we say immigrants, we of course mean their kids and grandkids, too.

FDR literally bragged that he teased Churchill to Stalin's face to get the old man to "thaw." he ganged up on the one leader who actually shared his values to flatter the one running a gulag.
it worked about as well as you'd expect. Stalin smiled, signed a promise of "free elections" in Poland, then installed a puppet regime before the ink dried. FDR went home calling it a triumph. within two years Poland, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria were all communist dictatorships.

This kind of rhetoric only ever strengthens my resolve against immigration, because what it demonstrates is that immigration is a special kind of issue unlike all others in that it fundamentally changes the composition of the country in a way that snowballs and leads the people who came as immigrants, and those people who marry and employ them, and so on, to be even more committed to the project than before, because now they’ve wrapped up a significant portion of their personality in support of immigrants.
This makes this issue unlike any other. It’s not at all like debating property taxes or whatever.
