@ComuDoMega War in Middle Earth. Thanks to it (and the Bakshi LOTR movie) I wound up reading the books and this wound up being a watershed moment that followed me all my life.

@arianred128 ... (continue from previous post) which in America is a classic, but it wasn't loved in Japan and I've heard that's because the translation for the Famicom version made the game impossible to understand. Did you ever play that?

Ms. Pac-Man was actually created as an unauthorized mod called Crazy Otto by General Computer Corp before Midway bought it!

@arianred128 Truth is, western games in the eighties could also be cryptic. Especially on PC. If we had gotten Druaga in the 80s it would have fit right in. Too bad we didn't get it until it was too late. I've heard there was a similar situation with Shadowgate...

@arianred128 Auto translate is having problems with "Druaga" 😆 So did most players in America. Since Druaga is so cryptic, many Americans thought the game was made by crazy people. In reality of course, you're supposed to discuss the game with friends, but it was too late when we got it.

@Muteki_Games_X How do you make a shooting game out of a very intellectual and emotional manga that didnt have a lot of action scenes?

@beezlive178rx Heh, autotranslate can not handle the title XEXEX. I always found this game's ending weird. I would ask, but I don't want to spoil it for those who haven't beaten the game. (I credit-spammed the American version, maybe it makes more sense in Japan?)

@pautrox @theshows0ver_ @AesirMalos In this case, we can give the nod to Zelda for getting it right. MML may have came out first but I remember not using its lock-on all that often because it forces you to stand in place, and circle-strafing was usually a much safer tactic.

The Legend Of Zelda is THE Pinnacle of ALL gaming. It's the Standard of Excellence and Quality that is often imitated, but never duplicated. LOZ is the only franchises that consistently drops GOTY contenders and Dominates Greatest Games Of All-Time list. Nothing comes close
Alvro ❄🏔@ChispaZoReal

@pautrox @AesirMalos Heck, Tomb Raider even had a level called the Aqueducts, which is basically the Water Temple, and is infamous for literally the exact same reason--because its a tedious level whose gimmick revolves around raising and lowering water levels.

@jispylicious @AesirMalos 1/3 OOT didn't just "go 3D"—it literally invented the Z-Targeting system that every modern action game (from Dark Souls to GoW) still uses today. Comparing it to early Tomb Raider’s tank controls is technically and mechanically inaccurate.

@pautrox @AesirMalos When I talk about Tomb Raider, its not the controls I'm comparing. It's more the actual levels. How many Tomb Raider levels are go here, hit a switch, push a block to make a platform, do this really precise jump... you can describe most OoT dungeons similarly.

@Maguro_Maznaga Remember when From Software was only known for Armored Core and King's Field on the PS1? I remember. People called me weird for liking them. Now they're popular. Who's the weird one now? Sadly I don't like their post-Dark Souls games as much as their PS1 stuff.

@DT2ComicsChat What's funny is, as someone who has read the first 66 issues of X-Men... the four original members all ended up getting origins later anyway. Usually something like "their parents were near something radioactive and it passed on to their kid."

@LibertyForAll19 I actually agree. As a kid me and friends did something similar to TTRPG, but entirely by accident, without even knowing that's what we were doing, just kinda making up rules and systems as we went along. I remember having rulebooks didn't actually make it better.

@mo_chu001 Ever since I saw the Japanese version, I just can't go back to the American soundtrack. The Japanese just fits and makes things so much stronger. Ken arriving and punching the ground as the music swells up, before he and Ryu team up on Bison... priceless.

@SandyofCthulhu Fun fact: Once and Future King is a compilation. Most of its parts were published separately as stand-alone books, and "Sword in the Stone" in particular has a lot of huge differences in the stand-alone version. The biggest one IMO: OaFK deletes Madame Mim entirely.

T. H. White’s epic book The Once and Future King made the argument that indeed might could make right, and the only way to fix this was to suborn Might into the service of Right. Making Right cool, so the tough knights would WANT to be good. We got two awesome films out of it - Sword in the Stone and Camelot. The book is a tragedy.
