If you can't change your mind, then you're not using it | San Diego | @YIMBYDemsSD Policy | @LeadershipSD Alum

That sound you’re hearing? It’s a tectonic shift in how and where California builds housing! Why? Because the California legislature just passed #SB79 and legalized new multifamily housing near major transit stations across the state!!!

And there it is! #SB79, Sen. Scott Wiener’s bill to legalize multifamily housing near major public transit stops across California, just passed the state assembly! We are one vote away from the most significant shift in land-use policy California has ever seen!

How bad is San Diego’s budget problem? Well, it’s actually worse than what is widely reported. More importantly, how do we fix it? This is part 1 of 2 that identifies the city’s current general fund spending gap. The city projects operating deficits of about $140-$190M annually but that’s not counting setting aside about $60M annually to reach the city’s General Fund savings goal. We have also been deferring facility maintenance by $150M and road maintenance by $120M annually. This lack of effective prioritization has put us in a big infrastructure hole. To start actually making investments in the city again, we’ll need at least $50M annually. And if we don’t want to continue the increase parking rates, we’ll have to find another $30M. The headline spending deficit is around $250M, but the true spending gap from where we are now to where we want to be is closer to $610M. So where do we find $610M? Follow along for part 2.
