Current Initiatives and Counter-Movements While the gap remains wide, several programmes are working to create sustainable local pathways: VUKA Rugby: A partnership between SARU and the SA Rugby Legends Association (SARLA) specifically targets disadvantaged communities to provide structured training and competition. The TRY Initiative: Focuses on bringing high-performance standards to townships like Westberry, recently helping over 1,500 players gain exposure through interprovincial tournaments. Grassroots Foundations: Organizations like the Hollywood Foundation and the Rugby Boosters FC provide kit and equipment to struggling schools that lack traditional sponsorship. Critics argue that SA Rugby is still building "from the top down" rather than investing deeply in the ground-up infrastructure required to make township schools self-sustaining high-performance hubs.
