Yes, this is correct. And the reason is because our capitalist classes have decided that it is not sufficiently profitable, so they're not going to do it. We must understand this reality. Capital *cannot* be relied upon to address the climate crisis.

Nancy situates the report in the politics of the day: Japan financed it, hoping the World Bank could take the lessons of E Asia's growth to other developing regions. But the Cold War had just ended. The ink was still fresh on the Washington Consensus. The Bank wasn't ready.

The postwar social contract that promised economic security was inherently unstable. In this @LevyEcon paper, I explain how @doctorow 's enshittification process applies to the labor market with devastating precision and how we might reverse engineer it. levyinstitute.org/wp-content/upl…

Capitalism’s promise of prosperity has always been shadowed by ecological destruction and persistent exploitation. Our podcast of the week excavates a lineage of capitalism's critics, many of whom anticipated crises now intensifying. With @JohnCassidy buff.ly/x4otfzM

We often hear about "victims of communism", but rarely about the colossal and continuous death toll imposed by capitalism. The historic mortality crisis that capitalist restoration caused in Eastern Europe — unprecedented in peace time — tells a very different story.🧵

Palestinian refugees are literally not allowed to have a life in Malaysia. The one time we had refugees in here, the "antizionist" gov locked them in a gilded cage & then sent them back when the Palestinians were protesting their maltreatment.
Kamal Jamil@kamalb72

@VirgilDuck @kkrish22_KK As a Malaysian, I honestly do not think that is the case. Our animosity to Israel has always been tied to their oppression of the Palestinians. There are so few Jews here that antisemitism has never been an issue. You will not hear us chant "khaybar ya yahud" when we protest.

We named her “Farah”, which means ‘Joy’. My niece is only 10 days old. She was born to bring joy into our world, but in this world, she has found only hunger. 10 days… and her little eyes have seen nothing but our helplessness. Farah has been on formula since her first day, as her mother is suffering from severe malnutrition after the famine we have endured and are still enduring. And now, we cannot afford the milk that keeps her alive. Every night that passes, we are filled with fear of what is to come, the fear that her faint whimpers might be the last thing we ever hear from her. Farah needs us to provide the milk that will keep her alive. With these words, I’m begging you for help. Help for this child who has seen nothing of life but hunger and deprivation. Please, I beg you, donate and share. chuffed.org/project/141200…

Columbia CS Prof explains why LLMs can’t generate new scientific ideas. Bcz LLMs learn a structured “map”, Bayesian manifold, of known data and work well within it, but fail outside it. But true discovery means creating new maps, which LLMs cannot do.

Economics can seem abstract and remote from the urgent crises people face. But systems matter—they determine who has access to resources and who does not. The activists on the Freedom Flotilla, include @AdaColau who I worked closely with through our @IIPP_UCL work in Barcelona when she was mayor. She was courageous then taking on the financial sector when trying to build a “housing for all” strategy for Barcelona and again now with courage in attempting to bring aid to those under siege in Gaza when the international system has failed them. These actions remind us that economics is fundamentally about how we organise society to meet human needs. When global institutions, market structures or acts of hostility leave many without food, water and safety, direct solidarity becomes necessary. They are the real heroes: taking action for a better world and inspiring all of us to do the same.

In a new paper, we provide fresh evidence on the macroeconomic effects of public investment in 27 EU member states. We find that public investment has favorable effects on output and unemployment; doesn't crowd out private investment; and doesn't jeopardise debt sustainability.
