I truly believe the Hate Speech Bill which is set to become law in the next few weeks is the most draconian and illiberal piece of legislation that I’ve seen anywhere in the Western world. The question I most often get from people who are as concerned as I am is: “What can we do to stop it?” I’ve been pondering this for many weeks and the answer is due to the overwhelming support within the Oireachtas for the bill, I’m not convinced we can do anything at this late stage. There are however people within the Dáil on all sides of the aisle who do have reservations about this bill, so by all means contact your local TDs and Senators and implore them to see reason and to do everything in their power to not take the country down this perilous road. If that fails then you should engage canvassers and politicians who knock on your door and let them know that you believe in freedom of speech for everyone and will not vote for them or their party while they support keeping this law. The most important thing you can do is speak to family, friends and speak out against it on social media. Sure those who desperately want this legislation will attack you and call you all sorts of names, because that’s all they have left, but by refusing to be cowed by their baseless smears you are sending a message not only to the smear merchants, but more importantly to the people who are listening what you’re saying, agreeing with you and thinking if you can do it, then they can do it too. If enough people do that then we will be successful. If enough people do that we will win.
