Opening remarks from the Director General @DrAbeySheikh of @NCPD_Kenya notes that Kenya’s population dynamics are rapidly shifting, marked by a significant youth bulge that calls for greater investment in young people to harness the country’s demographic dividend. The report highlights important national progress, including declining mortality and fertility rates, a reduced dependency ratio from over 100 to 75 that supports economic growth, expanded access to education and health services, strengthened policy and legal frameworks, and improved data collection to guide interventions. At the same time, Kenya is experiencing both a growing youth population and an emerging ageing population. Continued population growth is placing pressure on resources, while unemployment, underemployment, and a persistent skills mismatch remain critical concerns. This raises important questions: How can Kenya better align education outcomes with labour market needs? And how do we ensure that what learners study matches the skills required in today’s economy? #PopulationAtTheCentre #KenyaPSA2025

Received H.E. Jérôme Bresson, Ambassador of France to Djibouti, who paid me a courtesy call in Djibouti ahead of the France-Africa Summit in 2026. We explored avenues to further strengthen the IGAD–France strategic partnership, including enhanced cooperation on regional governance and integration, as well as broader collaboration across the IGAD region.
