Dear Twitter/X, I'm just gonna drop this here... It's a call to adventure for the curious — in the form of ten (rather compelling) reasons to consider joining the next Nervous System Mastery cohort. Onwards! Jonny [MEGA-THREAD] 🧵

@XcelEnergyCO we are still without power almost 36 hours later. Freezing at home with a newborn and toddler. Was given zero advance notice that power would be turned off. This lack of communication is pathetic. When will power be back in Golden??

@DanKalb @MayorShengThao why is it so hard to get the City of Oakland to fulfill basic city services? This smashed and abandoned car has been sitting across the street from our home in Temescal for a month now, with four separate tickets already submitted to Oak 311

Meet @mill, a new way to keep food out of landfills, because wasted food is worse than you think Food from homes is 1/2 of the food in landfills (ReFED) where it produces methane, a greenhouse gas 80x more potent than CO2 over 20-yrs (IPCC) Learn more at mill.com

Over the last 3 years, I became obsessed with our food waste problem. So @htannenbaum and I started @mill, a practical, new system to prevent waste, making it easy to take steps at home that are better for our kitchens and our planet. Check it out at mill.com

What I think a lot of people who are disengaged with climate discourse don't understand is that... we're losing this battle. We're headed towards catastrophe at full speed. We continue to emit CO2 than ever before year after year. We're losing the only home we've ever known.

JUST IN: The 80,000-member coal miners union, United Mine Workers, just called on Joe Manchin to support the Build Back Better Act, telling him that BBB will protect labor and give coal miners a *better* shot at getting jobs in a renewable energy future.

We're now 2 yrs into the decisive decade. Emissions should be in an unprecedented fall, instead we're seeing the 2nd biggest rise ever recorded. We're wasting invaluable time pretending we can solve this crisis without treating it like a crisis. World leaders are still in denial.

Some context on price tags: The $725.8 billion defense spending bill is for 1 year. The $3.5 trillion Build Back Better plan is over 10 years. Apples to apples, Biden's economic and social policy bill is less than half of what Congress wants to spend on the Pentagon.

It’s wildly dumb that we keep talking about the “cost” of climate action when: 1) most of those costs are actually investments 2) the cost of inaction is astronomically more 3) our civilization is at stake

If you care about the planet. If you care about US leadership. If you care about our children. If you care about affordable energy. If you care about our democracy. Then it's time to mobilize. So, so much is at stake. Thread: nytimes.com/2021/10/15/cli…

We cannot advance legislation that makes the climate crisis worse. The Exxon-designed “bipartisan” infrastructure plan worsens emissions, but pairing it w/clean energy in Build Back Better neutralizes BIF’s harm and lets us tackle the climate crisis. We cannot afford to gut it.

Breaking News: The heart of President Biden's climate agenda — a push to replace coal- and gas-fired power plants — is said to likely be cut from the budget bill because Senator Joe Manchin opposes it. nyti.ms/3aHKAv7

Absolutely wild that a guy who literally owns a coal producing business that generates millions for him — currently — can make this kind of decision for the whole country and it’s not illegal

As a climate reporter, it’s been frustrating to watch the legislative debate. By focusing on $3.5T as a big number, it entirely misses the economic context of climate change. The costs will be astronomical, the losses huge. Old budgets are not a good baseline. Here’s why:
