When you go to a wedding, and you run into someone you don't like, you politely say hello, and move on. Because you're an adult. Karen Pence blanked the President-elect and his wife... in a church... at a funeral... as a Christian.... Pathetic.

@TKavulla @PA_PUC I agree with you there. If any should be "protected" it should the resi. That said, the entire pricing structure of the power mkts is broken, incentives misplaced, prerogatives allocated exactly wrong.

Man are there some bad ideas out there about how states should "protect consumers" in PJM in the face of data-center growth. In my comments to the @PA_PUC today, I take aim at one of the worst:

In the energy world: It's worth noting that the regulations that set up competitive markets for pipelines and power grids are longer than the regulation that says "the government shall fix a price that is just and reasonable." Page count is not a great metric!

@fancy_1982 @TKavulla my gut isthe arb lost to incumbents is maybe 20% or more of a 4,200 TWh mkt - the biggest arb oppty I have ever seen in my career.

@johnsjaffray @TKavulla WECC and SEEM should be forced to create a nodal RTO and do away with the sham that is current vertically integrated but siloed investor owned monopoly utilities that engage in piracy stealing from consumers

When is a "market" not a market? When it trades 80 aMW on a 250,000 MW footprint. When transaction costs exceed benefits, so everyone-- even those who made profitable trades -- are lovers. What a dumb "market".
Simon Mahan@SimonMahan

"Last year, SEEM, a real-time market launched in late 2022, produced $3.7 million in reported benefits and had $4.3 million in administrative costs, cleared 704,000/MWh, or 0.1% of the region’s annual demand, and no non-utilities appear to have participated in it" utilitydive.com/news/ferc-sout…

@fancy_1982 @TKavulla ok... but nodal is also a sham in that it does not get to root of prob. leaves term mkts to incumbents so they can trade into massive vol when it occurs, AND covers all their costs when lmps are soggy...

@lawofruby amazing articulation of that judicial proceeding. thx and very clear... I may be wrong, but I recall a section in the Isaacson book on Leonardo, speaking to similar conclusion of in and out of body viabilities... thx good work.

Finally, one more note for election law watchers. Guess who is presiding over tomorrow’s bench trial about the legality of two Georgia Election Board rules? Yep, it’s Judge Robert McBurney. See you then. FIN.

Look beyond the result of today’s GA abortion decision, and you can see Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney stake out a broader, methodological position, especially in the footnotes. 1/

@JoshuaBasseches There is no doubt that the dominant bias in utility is status quo...no competition. Utility space in the US is probably the only 'unreconstructed' market opportunity... left.

Instead, we get grid operators intent on defending the status quo, resisting transformation of the energy system to mitigate climate change, & we are left to question the role of their ties to the private interests whose capital investments constitute the grid they operate. (3/3)

"Grid operators" want to portray themselves as unbiased technocrats dedicated to keeping the lights on, but research has shown that they are actually more like cartels of private utility industry actors. (1/)

@TKavulla no doubt. Premise 1: power mkts in US are broken. 2: utils arent gonna fix them. 3: if you know your load, know your gen, why all the vol? Because incumbents can trade into it.... party on garth!

@SimonMahan exactly, it is not exactly a suprise. remember, the incumbent generators (conflicted as they own the means of delivery), love these high prices. They cover up alot of mistakes and give them juicy profits,

The ridulous quantity of automated posts here on twitter make me seriously question the value of continuing to post. It's become like Facebook where over 80% of posts are now fake. It's all looking to be a waste of time.

Missed opportunities. The Walz pick is a sign of overconfidence from the Harris campaign. They do not feel they had to track to the middle to enlarge the tent. Same mistake made by the Trump campaign when it was on a high and went for Vance, a pick that did not expand the base
