@ChicagoContrar1 @ChicagosMayor It would be great if our federal law enforcement was helping local law enforcement with real criminals like this vs the local tamale guy

While @ChicagosMayor is obsessing over ICE arresting illegal immigrants, another one of these incidents took place Saturday at 31st and St. Louis in Little Village. It's called a mass shooting. Apparently, some rapper, THF Bay Zoo, was killed.

@ChicagoContrar1 Tear gas or no tear gas, if feels like a terrible use of federal resources to arrest an uber driver in a city with so many unsolved murders

Who here agrees with us when we say ICE/CBP has been entirely justified in its use of tear gas against those who interfere with federal agents arresting illegals?

@R_Thaler Accidents can happen to anyone, anywhere, anytime, and are hard to predict. So more targeted media don't work, so you have to go with something that's a broad targeted as possible

"What happened to the lefty street cadres" is an interesting question... we're barely even getting campus protests anymore. (Universities making it harder to protest played a role here but there is just way less street organizing/protest than four years ago)
Dan McLaughlin@baseballcrank

Also, unlike the many lefty street cadres that show up for riots, there's maybe two hundred dudes in the whole country who would fit that description, and most of them are still in jail from 2021.

Is there a dumber road layout in the entire city of Chicago than this stretch of Division just west of the highway? First, a lane pinch crossing the canal bridge. Then another lane pinch crossing the river bridge. All leading up to the highway onramp, ensuring that you will sit in traffic for 30 mins to travel half a mile, idling, belching out unnecessary emissions just because some dummy didn’t design the bridges to be two lanes each way. It’s not like there’s a ton of car traffic going from downtown to 90/94 every moment of the day. Fixing this would do more to cut down on congestion than any single other modification on the whole northside.

Amazing things are happening in DC where 20% of renters are not paying rent due to a disastrous COVID era ordinance allowing tenants to delay eviction by simply applying for rental assistance over and over and over again, even if they don’t qualify. The “abolish rent” children might think this is cool, but if those current owners give up their properties, the affordability covenants end, and what was reserved for affordable housing now becomes market rate housing. So you end up losing affordable housing.

@NateSilver538 Nationalism in the 19th Century led to the Irish not embracing the English game of soccer and calling their flat fields with goal posts “Gaelic football fields”

Exciting boosts in cycling seen in Paris, from 4 to 11% that's a big boost to a low cost way to reduce congestion, pollution and traffic fatalities. But important differences too, only 10% of trips in Paris were from cars, in Chicago its closer to 50% nytimes.com/2024/08/26/nyr…

@slucy RNC hardly mentioned abortion, doesn’t mean they won’t ban it, just means it’s not the issue that will win them power, same logic I think

@johnxkenny I would fully support that. But FYI, there are no helmet laws to enforce. Unlike virtually one of our peer cities, Chicago does not require that even minors wear helmets. It’s absurd to claim to care about safety while also not mandating helmets.

This is insane logic and textbook survivorship bias. The reason you haven’t seen many fatal accidents where a helmet would have made a difference is because riders wearing a helmet don’t die as often as those without one. By this logic car passengers shouldn’t buckle seat belts because you can still die in a car crash even if you do. Mandatory bike helmets now.

@AJManaseer Helmets do save lives but I haven’t seen many fatal accidents where a helmet would have made a difference. It’s mostly from road designs. A helmet is not going to save you if you get run over by a turning truck.

🧵(1/n) Went down a bike law rabbit hole and discovered something odd… If safety is the primary motivation for bike lanes, why doesn’t Chicago/IL require wearing a helmet like many other states do? This seems like the low hanging fruit of cyclist safety.

The Augusta Bike Lane in its natural state… (totally unused). I saw one guy use it last week. Since then, zero. And this is all in peak cycling weather. Imagine during the rest of year. I invite any of Chicago’s leading bike advocates to come sit with me there for an hour and if more than 3% of passersby are on bikes, I will donate $1000 to the charity of their choice and admit I was wrong. If not, you tweet a retraction admitting I was right that this lane is an underutilized white elephant (not to mention poorly designed and dangerous). 3% on a nice summer day, for one of the northside’s main bike arteries. Should be easy, right? @cornoisseur @mollyfleck @jasonshah @aschweng93 @MilwaukeeAvBike @johnxkenny
