UK Power Networks is registered for tax in Hong Kong, where it stashes its £300m+ annual profits for maximum tax advantage. They won't be coming back to Margate to fix anything because they don't have to do so. There's a reason they call us Treasure Island.
Rob Yates@robyatestweets

Please can you come back to Margate @UKPowerNetworks and do the job properly, this is directly outside of @TCMargate art gallery. Have some respect.

If the government really want to fix the NHS and public services, here are some ways to fund it: ➡️ Tax fortunes over £10m at 2% (£24bn a year) ➡️ Tax income from wealth the same as income from work (£24.2bn/yr) ➡️ Close inheritance tax loopholes (£1.4bn/yr)

@alastairis @jwsal On council development (i.e the ones the council has maximum control of) it's better - funding is the issue but completely agree more council housing is best. 75% of the new council housing development programme will be social rent: news.hackney.gov.uk/1000-new-counc…

Cllr Alastair Binnie-Lubbock 💚🌍 🍉 (he/they)
I just asked Deputy Mayor of Hackney r.e. capital works plans & what's the definition of genuinely affordable homes & why couldn't council build 50% council homes. He said 50% council rent couldn't work cos building 50% unaffordable / 20% intermediate was needed to get 30% social

Crazy stat in UK Housing Review: govt spending on housing is at its highest: £30.5 billion in 2021/22 compared to £22.3 billion in 1975/76, in real terms. In the 70s, 95% was on housebuilding, now it's only 12%. The main reason for this drop? A rise in demand for housing benefit.

@alastairis @jwsal There are also council schemes where additional funding has become available and the end result has been a better social mix than originally planned. I think Chowdhury Walk is an example of this where it ended up better than planned.

@alastairis @jwsal This can (and does) also work the other way with "clawback clauses" in planning consent for private development. If their profit margin increases over the development so can their social housing contributions.

Reducing the right-to-buy discounts is an important first step in ending a policy that has decimated council housing across the country. Social housing must be at the centre of Labour's housing plans.
Matthew Pennycook MP@mtpennycook

The government is acting to protect our social housing stock and build more affordable homes. This weekend we've announced: ✅A £500m top-up to the Affordable Homes Programme. ✅A reduction of Right to Buy discounts. ✅Allowing councils to retain 100% of Right to Buy receipts.

@HackneyLivingSt @LoveHaggerston The council have already put up an ANPR camera here so you have to question if the consultation is genuine. There is no need - there is loads of alternative ES access here. This approach just breeds suspicion of filters as money making schemes. @LoveHaggerston please listen.

Remember that we decided to destroy the world's most extensive tram network for the benefit of rich private car owners. One of the most socially and environmentally ruinous decisions this country has made since the advent of the industrial revolution.
Samuel Hughes@SCP_Hughes

By 1914, London's borough councils had developed the world’s most extensive tram network. Some two hundred cities across Britain had laid tram networks of their own.

The Tories claimed a minimum wage would cause mass unemployment — it didn’t. They demonised trade unions, but unions are the combined power of millions of working people. I support the Employment Rights Bill and urge us to scrap every anti-union law since Thatcher’s government.
