One of the most common mistakes retailers make is also one of the simplest to get right. Lighting. Too much bright white light is uncomfortable, too little light and products become harder to find and less attractive. Lighting should be warmer and less bright in aisles and walking areas, but brighter more natural on products and communications. Next time you are in your favorite store, take note of the array of lighting. It is the most important of the senses that makes you want to come back to a store. The best stores have thoughtful lighting, the temperature is always comfortable, sounds/music are carefully curated and the smells are no accident – perhaps they roast coffee, bake bread or have scented candles. These senses make the store so appealing you can’t wait to return. Without even realizing why.
