My monologue on Trump’s War from today’s The Times at One with Andrew Neil — @TimesRadio The US marines have arrived in the Gulf region in the shape of the 31st expeditionary unit — a force of 3,500 including 2,200 combat troops.  A second Marine unit of similar size is on its way, as is a chunk of the formidable 82nd airborne division of the US Army.  All told, President Trump is assembling a force that could put up to 20,000 boots on the ground before Spring is out. But to what purpose?  Trump claims that talks with Iran are going well — ‘they’re going to do everything we want’ he said at the weekend. The implication is that a ground force is being gathered simply to concentrate Iranian minds.  Maybe. Except that so far it isn’t working. There are, as yet, no direct talks between Iran and America. The Iranians seem in no hurry to join them. In terms of what each side wants out of peace talks, they couldn’t be further apart.  So there is growing talk out of Washington about Trump resorting to boots on the ground.  But, I ask again, to what purpose? Certainly not a ground invasion. America has nowhere near enough manpower in the region to occupy by force a country of 90m people — bigger in land mass than the UK, Spain, France and Germany combined.  Which leaves more limited incursions with specific objectives.  Even these — such as occupying Kharg Island or seizing Iran’s enriched uranium — have the hallmark of disaster written all over them. 1/2

A “security group” around the Rusholme and Victoria Park area near Manchester Central Mosque has decided to start their own security firm. “Manchester Community Watch” started as a WhatsApp group for reporting “unjust behavior” against minorities. It quickly grew to over 130 verified recruits through a strict ID + selfie verification process to keep out bad actors. The group has now applied for Security Industry Authority licences so they can operate legally as a private security firm.

I'm going to set out the conversation I had with the Metropolitan Police Press Office yesterday. People can judge whether their response represents an attempt to facilitate a legitimate journalistic query, or something else: Me: "Hi, I'm writing about the above issue for tomorrow's paper [Mandelson]. I would like to know: If the Met has any record of the reported theft of former Downing Street Chief of Staff Morgan McSweeney's mobile phone, as widely reported in the media. If any efforts are being made to recover the phone given its significance to the investigation. If any efforts have been made to obtain centrally held Government records of communications from the phone" Many thanks

Just had the police show up at my door, investigating an "anonymous" domestic abuse and "coercive control" allegation made against me. Two officers spoke to my wife, and concluded it was malicious and politically motivated. The police were professional and apologetic. I won't share their identities when they were just doing their job. They shouldn't have their time wasted like that. But this is a new low. Disagree with me about anything you like, but leave my family out of it.

@KirstieMAllsopp And with the Ministry of Justice drive for non custodial sentences there are tens of thousands of people available to carry out the work of picking up litter. Win win.

Litter is such an easy win for politicians. Keeping our streets clean reduces crime, it also reduces fear & perception of crime, The less litter you see the less is dropped. You have a whole army of litter pickers in our schools and once trained they will never drop litter 1/2
