Seattle's last attempt at a therapeutic community (read: addiction) court was a total neo-abolitionist farce, where people diverted to it faced no consequences for not showing up (and most did not), and there were almost no meaningful interventions offered to the few who did. But that doesn't mean that a well conceived and resourced municipal misdemeanor-level therapeutic court isn't a good idea. There are therapeutic courts in suburbs like Auburn and Renton that do really excellent work helping those suffering from addiction regain control over their lives. Seattle could benefit from one too, provided it's done correctly. And King County Drug Court, which I recently had the privilege of visiting and touring, does absolutely incredible work turning around the lives of people arrested for serious crimes after falling deep into the trap of addiction. Which brings me to this very smart must read op ed (link to follow) in @SeaTimesOpinion today from my friend @josephbarsana about how drug court-style therapeutic approaches make a real and positive difference in people's lives. He should know, since he's both a graduate of King County Drug Court and now works there, providing meaningful assistance to those following in his footsteps as they seek to turn their lives around. He writes: "One of the biggest misconceptions today is that compassion and accountability are opposites. They are not. In therapeutic courts, they work together. Compassion does not mean lowering expectations. It means recognizing that people grow through support, not fear... And at the heart of diversion is a simple truth: We meet people where they are, but we do not leave them there. Therapeutic courts understand that people enter the system in crisis, but with the right expectations, support, and structure, they can leave with stability, dignity, and purpose."

@hawkblogger I was at training camp last year and was 20 yards away from Kenny McIntosh when he got his year ending injury doing a special teams drill. Maybe Mike had that in the back of his mind too.

Mike Macdonald saw Jadarian Price doing kick return drills and walked over, tapped him on the shoulder and said, “One’s enough, JD.” Then escorted him to the sideline to wait for the next drill. Teams always trying to strike the balance of getting work in while avoiding injury

Think it is time to completely phase Facebook out. It’s nice to be able to stay in contact with friends, but the constant flood of misinformation and lies that pops up on the news feed without any consequence is a huge problem. Like what the hell?…

@skaushik100 Whether you work within the system like me or are outside the system looking in, I don’t know how you can defend KCRHA anymore. Being honest, many of us would tell you it became HARDER not easier to house our clients after coordinated entry started.

$8M that they can’t account for. Maybe it was properly spent, maybe it was fraudulently disbursed. Nobody knows what happened to it because they can’t find any documentation. And on top of the $8M more than $4M in administrative overspend. Seems like we’re maybe finally at the end of the failed KCRHA experiment, which was structurally fatally flawed from the get go, and then was further hobbled by administrative incompetence and the determination of its leadership to infuse some of the most chuckleheaded, woo woo, crystal magic concepts of woke era cultural progressivism - like sacralizing “lived experience” as a higher form of knowing that must take precedence over any other forms of knowledge and expertise traditionally associated with competent governance - into its decision making. The mayor seems ready to pull the plug, and I heard a few days ago the Exec is not decided but maybe leaning that way. But if they do hit the kill switch, unwinding KCRHA is itself going to be a complicated task. I’m told the establishing MOU doc that undergirds KCRHA requires a one year ramp down period, and I also hear the County would face significant challenges reincorporating the administrative functions that it handed over to the agency (the City is bureaucratically in a better position to take back its portion). The County portions would (one assumes) be re-housed in DCHS, itself a troubled department with its own set of administrative oversight and fraud issues.

Word on the street is this is gonna be très bad. Lax fiscal controls, serious overspending. Also picking up chatter that there are more damning revelations to come soon about King County grantmaking.

@skaushik100 @sfchronicle I’ve always thought this comes down to fentanyl potency and toxicity. When I was using and traveling, the supply varied a lot by location. Overdose prevention and access to resources matter too, but the drug supply itself is a huge driver.

Interesting data from the @sfchronicle looking at per capita overdose deaths by county. It turns out Spokane and Pierce counties (Tacoma) in WA are both in the top 10 for large counties, and have higher overdose rates -- significantly higher in Spokane -- than King County, which I would not have expected. King County's overdose rate is still twice the national average for large American counties. h/t to @KeithNHumphreys for alerting me to this article (you should read his quotes in the Chronicle piece!)

I spoke with @sfchronicle about how drug overdoses are down, but still very high in absolute terms. sfchronicle.com/sf/article/ove…

@Ask_Spectrum You charged my mom’s account over $270 after she died because of a normal “billing cycle.” Your team would not also explain how an elderly woman was being charged $270 a month. I am going to make it my mission to expose how terrible of a company you are.

@tomrollman Lifelong Seahawks fan here. When they won in 2013, I was lost in heroin addiction and missed the chance to truly celebrate — especially with family I’ve since lost. Now 7 years sober, this Super Bowl win represents recovery, redemption, and how far this team and I have come!

Fascinating decision by Mike Macdonald to go outside the organization when his clear preference was to go internal. This will likely lead to Andrew Janocko (and possibly others) leaving. More to come on a big choice for Seattle.
Ian Rapoport@RapSheet

The #Seahawks are hiring #49ers TEs coach Brian Fleury as their new offensive coordinator, per The Insiders. After leading one of the best TE rooms, Fleury now takes over for Klint Kubiak, landing with a rival.
