I don't get it. The state pension is increasing by £600 a year. Universal credit is going up 6.1% a year, well above inflation. Yet we still need to bail everyone out when energy bills go up by £300? Then next April, we give everyone an inflation-linked benefits boost because of the crisis. It's a vicious circle.
Steven Swinford@Steven_Swinford

Exclusive from @benclatworthy Rachel Reeves is preparing to announce a limited package of support for energy bills over the summer and is instead focused on a more significant bailout in the winter The chancellor believes support for households who use gas for heating can wait until the autumn. The energy bill price cap, set by Ofgem, the regulator, is expected to jump by about £330 in July, forecasts suggest. That means average household bills will hit £1,972, according to Cornwall Insight, a consultancy. Treasury officials said Reeves was expected to allow this to go ahead. She believes the picture will be clearer by autumn and any support package should be introduced when gas consumption jumps with the arrival of colder months Government figures show that households use 78 per cent of their annual gas consumption during the winter thetimes.com/uk/politics/ar…

No one should lose out by working more, but the UK’s tax cliffs can mean exactly that for low & high earners. In a new @britishprogress paper, we show how the government can end this at no extra cost. And we built a tool to show how it would affect you: tax-cliffs.vercel.app

Kerridge is a great example of the mental paralysis much of Britain has. Labour have destroyed the hospitality industry via NI and minimum wage increases, but he keeps coming back for more. He cannot comprehend a world without the state involved in free enterprise.

If I was Jacob Bethell and the only thing stopping that innings from being match winning in a record breaking chase was the fact Harry Brook had trampolines for hands and that Sam Curran couldn’t hit it off the square my head would simply cease to exist

How interesting. The leader of the Liberal Democrats thinks how much help from the state citizens should receive ought to be based on the quantity of tax you have paid into the system. Bring it on!
Ed Davey@EdwardJDavey

We rightly expect our Armed Forces to protect British citizens abroad. So it’s right that tax exiles should pay UK tax like the rest of us, whether they’re right-wing political pundits or washed-up footballers.
