@jsquare i feel especially bad for my friends. both 2nd year master's at the lab and applying to phd. incidents like this is why i almost didn't stay at mit for phd. it's hard to have balance here when this is the type of stuff that happens.

Being a Black woman PhD student in Boston is exhausting. Last night two friends and colleagues (also Black women) and I went to dinner at @jmCurleyBar after watching Wakanda Forever with MIT's BGSA and BSU.

This was humiliating. We probably would've ordered a third round, as we were celebrating grad school milestones and fellowship awards. The way we were treated was beyond bad customer service, it was discriminatory and put us in an unsafe situation.

not even to mention the question of rigor. Most studies we do take 3+ months of design/pilots/IRB prior to even running the first trial. But I'm even ignoring that fact entirely in this argument of just consider that each country has very different IRB approval times/process 2/2

#CHI2023 reviewers requesting studies in 5-weeks. I'm all in favor of intellectual debate but you might consider that some authors might be in a place where the **institutional review board** that approves user studies needs way (!) more time than that = out of authors' control

"Infinite Conversation" — one of the most satisfying things I've seen in a while. An endless generative conversation, spoken in the synthetically generated voices of Werner Herzog and Slavoj Žižek, a new project by @liviopacifico: infiniteconversation.com

So awesome! /cc @WernerTwertzog @SlavojTweezek "Welcome to the Infinite Conversation: an AI generated, never-ending discussion between Werner Herzog and Slavoj Žižek. Everything you hear is fully generated by a machine." infiniteconversation.com

Today marks the end of the first Experimental Clay Residency at the Expressive Computation Lab😢 It was a privilege to work with residents Avi Farber and Pilar Wiley over these past months along with @farwest1138 and @viscousvoid.

I am excited to announce that my lab has received the #NSFCAREER Award.(few months ago, tbt). Incredibly thankful to my students, collaborators and mentors. We would have the opportunity to create Body Modification Technologies and support #womeninstem . #nsfcareeraward #ucdavis

I had 0 acceptances for 3 submissions for ICER 2022, and 0 acceptances for 2 submissions for SIGCSE 2023. Disappointing, but it happens.

@repeatedroots I find that students have insights and applications that I would never have thought of on my own. I am simultaneously delighted and inspired by them. That's helped dial back my control freak tendencies a bit. It also doesn't reduce the research workload, just changes it.

So strange as a professor to not be doing *all* the research myself. Anybody else have a hard time with wanting to just do it all? Maybe I lowkey miss being a grad student.
