@icculus For what I remember about SimCity it might have taken 26 years to finish linking
English

I love that sdl12-compat is not only a drop-in replacement for SDL 1.2, it's also focused on _game preservation_...Jamestown (15 year-old binaries)? SimCity 3000 (TWENTY SIX YEAR-OLD BINARIES)?!?

@despair Templates - used with care - are also useful. Same with operator overloading and a few other conveniences.
Classes are ok-ish albeit the syntax and defaults are teeeeerrible - if you did not have them the code would have no problems at all, so in the end they are a wash.
English

Useful:
- classes
- vtables
- end-of-scope cleanup
- debuggers
- profilers
Not useful:
- std containers
- streams
- memory allocation
- exceptions
- syntax

@StephanieRct Trump does kind of remind me of Captain Bateson from Cause & Effect: stuck in the past and likely to blow everything up

There would be no such thing as a Donald Trump.

Do you think @realDonaldTrump would be a great starship captain? #startrek #trump

@seanparsons @david_nix It's weirder than that, Meta had a process to coach people through their own tech interview
English

@david_nix I remember someone telling me that the big US universities have training to beat these tests. So someone with an existing job, kids and other responsibilities has to do a puzzle test and they're up against 21 year old graduates who have trained on a bunch of similar puzzles.
English

A driving force to leave 9-5 is I'll never have to endure a tech interview again.
The industry has gone mad.
They don't care about your experience.
I've built distributed systems that process many billions of data points a day at near 100% uptime.
Doesn't matter.
We need you to live code the game of Connect Four.
(I'm not kidding. That was a real interview I had last summer.)
But now I don't care if the industry changes or not.
I don't want to win the game, I want to leave it.

@okonomiyonda The problem is they all prefer open source and GNU/Linux ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
English

@c_nich @okonomiyonda yes thank goodness for reasonable alternatives like <checks notes> msbuild
English

@okonomiyonda It truly is hard to imagine a more user-hostile language and system than make.
