@bradwascher this algorithm would be hilarious on any state with a centrally located population center

Seems like the curse of the MZZU radar never getting a good dataset continues into 2026...

@ameliaUrquhart_ So they just made it illegal to drive if you're legally transgender? I cannot imagine this will stand up in court

Kansas did something stupid. If a transgender resident of Kansas got their legal gender marker changed on their driver’s license, it’s now immediately invalid. No grace period was even given for them to obtain new, valid licenses and many will need to drive illegally to get them.

High-resolution satellite imagery of the Pella, Iowa EF3 tornado from July 19, 2018. A satellite tornado of sorts was reported right next to it, and I believe the imagery may have caught it! Appears to be anticyclonic based on the crop damage and how it maneuvered around the EF3.

My favorite part of snow days is the radar data, honestly. (Also the snow) When the radar is scanning at higher tilts, it's scanning through a taller portion of the atmosphere, and as a result we can see all the different layers and develop the overall air pattern out of it (as a VWP). I really love the visual effect though! And it's really fun to mentally work out what the hodograph would look like. For example closest to the radar the air is moving SW, but in fairly short time this turns clockwise with height and ends up being predominantly northeast-moving about 5KM up. Above that layer, we can see several discrete layers of slightly different intensity and direction. The VWP hodograph shows this quite well too -- turns with height for the first few KM before settling on WSW'ly winds (going ENE), with a few kinks in the hodograph that represent the discrete visible layers in the radar data quite well!

2 years in the making: a RAP-based, track-based, full-sounding analog system. Here's a hypothetical forecast for the Cole, OK tornado on 4/19/23, where it predicts large hail and the potential for deviantly-moving EF2+ tornadoes.

@WxTca Has there ever been an EPAC TC this time of year?

Given what I outlined above, it’s no surprise that models are trying to spin up a disturbance. It remains to be seen if this will lead to a TC, but the odds are as good as they get for January in this basin given the local SSTs and climatology.

Over the coming days, an unusual event may unfold over the Eastern Pacific. Courtesy of an amplified upstream pattern, strong ridging is expected to establish itself off the West Coast. As the jet stream splits, troughing dips down into the tropics, held in place by the block.
