Introducing the newest addition to our (@ArchForumUganda) portfolio. The proposed Center for Distance Learning at Makerere University, funded by the Republic of Korea through KOICA, is a purpose-designed multi-storey facility that combines durable reinforced-concrete construction with energyconscious architectural strategies to support Open, Distance and e-Learning (ODeL). The design uses the site’s existing levels to create two lower ground floors and an upper ground floor, minimizing earthworks and integrating parking, plant rooms and service areas at lower levels. The reinforced concrete framed superstructure with concrete block infill and steel roof provides robust, lowmaintenance building fabric; external facades are treated with recessed elements and balconies to provide sunshading and depth, reducing solar gain while allowing wide openings for natural daylight and crossventilation. Internally the building is arranged for flexible teaching, administration and support functions: clearly sized floortofloor heights (3.6 m) and enhanced ventilation for larger rooms enable comfortable learning spaces; each room is specified with adequate audio systems and provisions for mechanical ventilation where required. Services design emphasizes energy and water efficiency: highperformance mechanical installations, smart water fittings, and integrated fire detection/suppression systems are included. External hard and soft landscaping, pedestrian walkways and a 10 m buffer from existing roads improve campus integration, reduce noise and dust, and provide outdoor student spaces and canteen areas.
The facility directly aims to strengthen Makerere’s ODeLcapacity by providing dedicated, purpose-built physical infrastructure for content production, live/recorded lectures, faculty training and student support. Specified audio systems, designated AV rooms and reliable services (power, HVAC, communications provisions noted in the equipment and services schedule) enable high-quality synchronous and asynchronous delivery. The layout supports administrative workflows, digital resource storage, and ICT equipment hosting while the lowerlevel plant and water storage/pump rooms ensure resilient building operations.
By combining sustainable passive design features, purpose-built AV and support spaces, and campus-sensitive siting, the Centre will expand Makerere’s reach, improve the quality and consistency of remote course delivery, and provide a scalable hub for ODeL pedagogy, staff capacity building and community engagement across Uganda and the region.

Last Wednesday, I, along with fellow members of the Committee on Affordable Housing in the Buganda Kingdom, had the privilege of attending a field visit led by the Minister responsible for Land and Buildings @dfkm1970. Our destination was a remarkable project implemented by Shelter and Settlement Alternatives in collaboration with the Kwefaako Housing Cooperative, comprised predominantly of women beneficiaries.
This experience proved to be an eye-opener for many of us, as we observed firsthand the transformative impact of participatory approaches in improving living conditions. The testimonies shared by the cooperative members were particularly inspiring, highlighting how their lives have been enhanced through access to affordable and decent housing.
Notably, each two-bedroom house is constructed at a remarkable cost of UGX 26 million, which encompasses land acquisition as well. As we left the site, we felt invigorated and empowered, eager to explore similar solutions that could be adapted to our own initiatives.

My colleague and I went over to Lesotho to watch a football match, only for the game to be postponed. The radio station, in a shocking twist of fate, decides to ditch the game commentary and switch gears to discuss... HIV. Meanwhile, their reporter is outside, obliviously coaxing people to come on air and share their thoughts about the postponed match!
In we stroll into the OB van, full of anticipation, thinking we're about to opine about our heartbreaking loss of trekking over 1000km and find no game to watch! The very first question we get hits us like a brick: “So, what are your thoughts on the HIV infection rate in our country?”

Early in our relationship, my wife used to come along during my inspections at construction sites! She says she was struck by the fact that the only women she encountered were either cleaning or serving food.
Deeply passionate about the dignity and advancement of women, she became concerned about the limited roles available to them.
Years later, when she had the opportunity to secure funding for a project focused on uplifting young women, she recalled the women she had seen on my sites. She asked me, “Are there any women now working in more skilled positions, like masons or supervisors?” I sadly replied, “No, most are still either cooking or sweeping.” This conversation inspired her to take action.
She created a project aimed at training young women for dignified jobs in construction. I connected her with my friend Dr. Kenneth Ssemwogerere, the founder of @SasaCollege and together they developed a program for vulnerable girls. Partnering with Mirembe Community College they identified vulnerable young women who for various reasons were facing challenges in life!
After just three months of training, the results have been incredible: 50 girls have completed courses in Decorative Bricklaying, with 85% now fully employed! This morning, my wife and I attended the graduation ceremony where the girls shared their inspiring testimonies, many with their proud parents and guardians by their side to receive their certificates.
This program powerfully demonstrates that no one is born to fail. With the right support and opportunities, everyone is capable of earning a decent living and contributing positively to their community.

Today, my family had the distinct honor of hosting The Right Reverend Wilson Kisekka, the 4th Bishop of the Luweero Diocese at our ancestral home in Nakafumu! It's remarkable to reflect on our journey together, having grown up in the same home in Kiwanga during the turbulent years of the 70s and 80s. At that time, we couldn’t have imagined that one day I would be welcoming him as a Bishop in a home that I head.
The Bishop was in Busiika Parish on his pastoral visit, and our home was blessed to be one of the ten locations where he conducted services. Despite the challenges we faced in our childhood, we were fortunate to experience God's grace, which has guided us to positions of responsibility.
During the service, the Bishop referenced 1 Samuel 7:12, saying, “Thus far the LORD has helped us,” a poignant reminder of the divine support we've received throughout our lives. This verse truly resonates with both of us, reaffirming how we must never forget God's help along our journey.
In addition to his pastoral mission, the Bishop was also raising support for the ongoing construction of the Synod Hall and Diocesan Offices, which my friends and I generously contributed to! He was accompanied by the Archdeacon of Luteete, the Parish Priest of Busiika Parish, various priests, and lay readers, all united in our shared faith.
This visit served as a beautiful reminder of the path God has laid out for us, from our upbringing together to our current roles in the community. It’s a blessing to reflect on how far we've come and the grace that has carried us through.

It is truly disheartening to hear the @CAF_Online decision to strip
#Senegal of the AFCON title and award it to #Morocco. This move reflects poorly on African football and raises serious questions about the people in charge of the game! There are moments when we feel a sense of pride in our continent and want to stand firm in our defense against those who hold prejudiced views about us. However, decisions like this leave one questioning whether those critics have had valid points all along.
