The Day We Thought the World Was Ending!
The Christmas of 1999 is one I will never forget. I was only ten years old, but there are things that happened that I still remember as though they were yesterday.
I don't know who started the rumour that the world was ending on 1st January 2000, but it spread everywhere. At least where I grew up, almost everyone had heard it. Some believed it completely, while others, including my late father, didn't seem convinced.
You could switch on the radio and hear preachers urging people to repent because the end was near. Throughout December, that was the conversation everywhere. Some people stopped working, others spent most of their time in church, while some simply stayed home waiting.
Christmas itself felt different.
At our home, Dad never seemed worried. I don't know whether he genuinely didn't believe the rumours or he simply didn't want to scare us, but he kept telling us, "If it really is the end, then enjoy your last days."
And enjoy we did! 🤣
A goat would be slaughtered, and we'd eat it until nothing was left. We drank soda with almost every meal. These days, a bottle of soda is just another drink. Back then, it was a luxury. At least for us... I don't know about you, so don't argue. 🤣
Then came 31st December 1999... the day we had all been waiting for.
We stayed home, ate, prayed, talked, and waited. The hours passed, and before we knew it, everyone was dozing off in the sitting room.
The next thing I remember was my mum waking us up the following morning.
For a moment, I genuinely thought we had all reached heaven! 🤣
Then it hit us... it was 1st January 2000. We were still alive!
Later, we started hearing stories of how other people had spent the night.
Some families spent the whole night in church, determined to meet their Creator from there if the world ended.
Others decided that if the world was ending anyway, they might as well dance into eternity! 🤣 They went to discos, filled trading centres, danced all night, and simply enjoyed the moment. Whether tomorrow came or not wasn't their biggest concern. What mattered was enjoying the present.
Then there were the sad stories. One family reportedly sold almost everything they owned and gave the money to a fake pastor who promised to pray them straight into heaven. The interesting part? He disappeared... and never showed up after the world failed to end.
I remembered all this after seeing a story about a 93-year-old woman being asked to leave a nursing home because she loved partying.
It made me smile.
Maybe she's onto something.
Life isn't meant to be spent sitting around waiting for the end. Whether you're 30 or 93, there is still room to laugh, dance, dream, travel, learn something new, and make memories.
None of us knows when our last day will come.
That's exactly why today deserves to be lived.
Enjoy your weekend, everyone❤️
