@Dylanmadden this was built in 1985 to a very shoddy standard and is already falling apart (sadly) you can see this in the video if you look at the edges of the metal steles

a civilization got invaded, occupied, and nearly erased. so someone carved 3,000 years of their kings, queens, and warriors into 16 concrete pillars on a hilltop. floor to ceiling. bronze. overlooking the sea. so nobody could delete them. it's called the Chronicles of Georgia.

Note: one book that seems to be related (and probably interesting — I still haven't read it) is Keith Houston's ‘Shady Characters’, but this is about the ‘*’/‘†’/‘‡’/‘§’/‘‖’/‘¶’ kind of characters, no so much the ⏺️▶️⏪⏩⏹️⏏️⏸️ kind. x.com/gro_tsen/statu…
Gro-Tsen@gro_tsen

Wait, there's a book called “Shady Characters: The Secret Life of Punctuation, Symbols & Other Typographical Marks” (by Keith Houston) entirely devoted to telling the story of typographical symbols? Shut up and take my money! shadycharacters.co.uk/books/

Side note: I really wish someone wrote a good book on the history of symbols. I mean, starting with punctuation, but including stuff like ‘†’, ‘§’, ‘¶’ or ‘⁂’ but also of the humble arrow ‘→’ (we take it for granted, but who started using this glyph for directions?) …
Gro-Tsen@gro_tsen

Just like the ~1980's came to a de facto standardization of the symbols ⏺️▶️⏪⏩⏹️⏏️⏸️ on cassette recorders and the 1990's a few extra ones like ⏻ (I think that came later!), contemporary graphical user interfaces have converged on some highly symbolized icons (ideographs?), …

Broke up with someone because we went out for a curry with friends and he karate chopped the plate of poppadoms "so we could all share" despite there being more than enough to have 2 each. I don't need that in my life.

Hobbes has an x-ray appointment with the new vet on Tuesday. His twitching and back leg have gotten significantly worse. I am genuinely worried about him so I may take him to the urgent vet tomorrow. He’s now constantly stretching that back leg. #prayforhobbes #advicepls

I write this with a heavy heart. And I guess this is an apology. Since the beginning of the full scale invasion we have stood with Ukraine. And since the start of the war, Ukraine have scaled production on every weapon system it produces at an astonishing rate. It was reported in October that Ukraine deploys 9000 drones per day on the frontlines, with one factory making 4,000 of these per day, and with interceptor drones being relatively new, it was announced 4 days ago they are set to manufacture 1,000 interceptor drones per day to engage incoming Shahed drones. Here comes the kicker, Ukraine have scaled their drone production at a time a war, while under siege with their backs against a wall, low on resources and supplies, whilst being bombed night after night, they have scaled this more than all of their allies production capacity combined to an embarrassing and sickening level. I will give you an example close to home regarding interceptor drones, the UK have produced an interceptor drone called Octopus, manufactured specifically for Russian Shahed drones, its effective and low cost. We plan to send them 2,000 per month. But why not 20,000, why not 100,000…. We send billions to Ukraine. 100,000 interceptor drones per month would cost £3.6 Billion per year at the £3,000 per unit cost. £3.6 Billion can be spent on factories in the UK for production with cost coming down over time and UK jobs being created and scaled up. It’s simple, you build the war fighting economy funded by the need of Ukraine, and if we should ever need it ourselves, it’s already in place. But still 2,000 unit per month, and this is the hard part to swallow, The United Kingdom is the primary country making interceptor drones for Ukraine with the largest capacity being passed over…… whilst Ukraine during active war time will be producing literally 15,000% that capacity…… We are failing these people. We have done so much yes, and I’m always an advocate for telling people that, but when it comes to drones for the front lines, when it comes to interceptor drones for incoming attacks, we are failing these people. We are failing these people miserably. @Keir_Starmer @JohnHealey_MP we need to do more. We are not doing enough. I would like to apologise to the people of Ukraine and @ZelenskyyUa , I would like to apologise to them for my country, and for all of our countries because we are failing them with this. And we need to do better. We need to talk about this more. We really need to talk about this more.
