It takes courage to challenge one’s own country about racism, or any serious shortcomings. And it’s the responsibility of us all. To improve Australia, for everyone. The media and politicians spend far more time publicly flogging anyone who raises the issue of racism, than actually discussing, exposing or combatting it. Laura’s just the latest. And she won’t be the last. Sociologists would say there are powerful vested interests in maintaining the social hierarchy and status quo, but that’s a conversation for another day. Why don’t we ask our multicultural communities what they think, how they feel, instead of all the predictable outrage to shut down conversations about Australian history? We’re stuck. Until we find a new way to break through.
