@DanielGoldersUK @centre_right_ All those utilities were eventually bought up investment banks and big corporations. She neglected to look after the millions who lost jobs the industrial north. Huge unemployment figures in the eighties created social unrest. Economic division occured btwn the nrth and sth.

@centre_right_ Thatcher's Privatisation is estimated to have generated close to £40 BILLION in revenues for the UK and helped reduce government borrowing. She also created billions more in wealth via ordinary people being able to buy, own and sell shares in companies (on which they paid tax).

I quite like Andy Burnham. But blaming Margaret Thatcher for northern problems is mental. Esp. when it was she and Tories who ignited Manchester’s renaissance.

@DanielGoldersUK @centre_right_ She sold off water, electricity, gas and left us all in the lurch struggling to pay for basic necessities, left us paying extortionate rents due to lack of social housing. Did not use the cash to improve the infrastructure or public services.

@centre_right_ They wanted managed decline of the major city of Liverpool. Unemployment was at 20% for young people. Manchester looked like a bomb site during the 80s. No work, no decent homes and no-go areas.

Except that it purports to claim that the area (Makerfield) has been a victim of 40 years of Thatcherism (that’s what Burnham seems to be running against, which means he’s also running against the Blair-Brown government, of which he was a part). Yet the backdrop to his wandering shows rows of neat, well-kept, substantial semi-detached homes, with plenty new cars in the driveways and a vibrant high street, despite all the road works improving it. Oh yes and a state school so good he sent his kids to it. Put simply — the pictures clash with his words of victimhood and deprivation.

One of the most effective bits of political communication on the left I’ve seen in a long time. A message and a powerful messenger.

@LucyTrims @afneil @grand_alison Everyone plays rugby league in Wigan and St Helens. You do know that Ashton in Makerfield borders both towns. They will be flattered when you call them all posh.

@afneil @grand_alison It looks very nice there. Quite something that he was playing rugby in 1984. Rugby wasn’t available at my secondary school when I was there between 84 & 89, it looks quite posh. Someone very close to me is moving there soon, I’m looking forward to going up to visit!

@LucyTrims @afneil @grand_alison You must be joking. Eddy Arrows has been a good school like so many others in the area for many years. Not posh just good working class kids with values. Working people have long known their worth in Haydock and Ashton.

@afneil He is describing his journey into politics and like so many others from the NW, he was profoundly affected by the divide that Thatcher created. I thank goodness for the Labour MPs and council that supported the working people at that time and will continue to do so under Burnham

@ICT_MrP It is also due to the fact that they have to do two years as an ECT. Many find themselves with mentors who are insensitive and reluctant to allow them to progress. 25yrs ago teachers were qualifying with QTS on the date they finished university. Mentoring was just supportive.

In today's education news... 22% of newly qualified teachers in England didn't enter the profession this year. That's double the first-year dropout rate. UCL asked them what shocked them most, I'll give you three guesses what they said.

You know who would be the perfect candidate for Makerfield? Maggie Oliver. I doubt that she could be persuaded to stand but what a head-to-head that would be.

@SandyofSuffolk @AngelaRayner There should be no need for many private landlords. Unheard of in the 70s when most people lived in decent coucill houses. Smaller private rented sector is what is needed.

So piss head Ange @AngelaRayner has just said she wants the minimum wage to go up again and renters' reforms to go further. That's the minimum wage that's causing businesses to close because they can't afford to pay more. That's the renters' reforms causing landlords to sell up making people homeless. These Labour politicians aren't very bright. Shocking.

I’ll be honest I cried watching this. Steve Houghton is the best politician I’ve ever met. He’s poured his heart and soul into Barnsley. He’s kind, loyal and honourable. His project swept away due to national anger. He deserved better.

What an incredible night. I cried. I laughed. I danced. I got to meet many amazing people from the industry front and back of screen. I got to hear the genius that is Richard Osman say nice things about me. I had both my girls with me (one on cam one off). I genuinely loved it. Thanks you so much for all the kind messages. Thank you #bafta Ps couldn't post all the pictures here, some fun ones, but they're on my insta... Source: Instagram share.google/ZPujjN2se43GVJ…

Rumours suggest Angela Rayner could take over from Rachel Reeves as Chancellor. She left Avondale High School in Stockport at 16, pregnant and with no qualifications. She later studied part-time at Stockport College, where she learned British Sign Language and gained an NVQ Level 2 in social care. She never went to university. She has no financial services experience.

@katellie @saqshum Okay, SOME Universities might. But not all. When I was at Uni, only Students and Staff (wit their ID card) could enter. You were allowed to sign a guest in, but they couldn't take any books out. I think we were limited to a number of sign-ins per year, too.
