We need to leverage our privilege/influence in the short term AND become students and friends who follow the lead of our siblings to the south everyday. It’s isn’t a burden to bear, it’s a gift to receive.

Rather than raise money for the next church “mission trip” to Mexico or Central America, what if we gave it to migrant shelters housing those fleeing violence? Or used it to simply learn from & build relationships w our Mexican colleagues on the front lines everyday?

Dont get me wrong, aid & advocacy are critical. They express some of the beauty of r faith. But, nothing is more important than relationship...day in & day out. It’s in classroom of everyday life that we learn to belong to one another. The “crisis” isn’t a headline, it’s a person

We then wonder why we feel so ill equipped to navigate moments like these when the pain is so visceral. We have a proximity problem. We have to immerse into the border/immigrant reality allow ourselves to be taught & guided by those we often try to “fix.”

Whether it’s short term “missions trips” to build a house or put on a Vacation Bible School, we often move south of the border as hero’s rather than friends. We solve rather than accompany. My Christian Mexican friend says, “we don’t need your charity, we need tie solidarity.”

With the best intentions, USAmerican Christians (that’s me too...) like to be the hero’s in the story. We jump in when things get bad, but find it inconvenient to make it a lifestyle. It’s easier to send money or a note & avoid the guilt of inaction.

PSA: migrant reality at border didn’t become crisis in last 2 weeks. It’s been crisis for DECADES. I’m happy to hear from Christians all over country now trying to help. It’s necessary & situation IS unique. But, we could use u 365 days yr; starting w/immigrants on ur own street.

I live in a border state. I appreciate the need to enforce and protect our international boundaries, but this zero-tolerance policy is cruel. It is immoral. And it breaks my heart. washingtonpost.com/opinions/laura…

If you’re a pastor that preaches sermons that constantly point out everyone’s flaws, shortcomings, sinful ways, and don’t end them with the gospel...You’re just condemning/shaming your congregation. Give them Jesus every week. Remind them why it’s OK to not measure up.
