#Montreal Food Tour: Day 12 Woman cannot live on ice cream alone. After my unfortunate experience at Mr. Steer last night, I was left hungry, tired, and kind of annoyed, so by the time I got back to my hotel all I wanted was sugar—so I grabbed an ice cream I went back to my room. I turned on the #Habs game and snuggled into watch, but was out like a light within about 20 minutes. I guess that’s what happens when you walk from 7:00am until 7:00pm. Needless to say, when I woke up this morning, I was hangry. As a 19th century rail, fur, and merchantile history enthusiast, I had already booked a reservation for Bar George—I was very excited to get back up to that part of town and start there before my morning activity of taking photos of “beaver baron” homes on Redpath Crescent. I had originally planned to go for supper and try their Beef Wellington, but I have other plans this afternoon, so I switched my reservation to the morning. The Full English was exactly what I needed. It was prepared beautifully. It arrived on a giant plate and came with two eggs, beautifully fluffy and crusty artisan sourdough bread that was lightly grilled, delicious house-made beans in a savoury tomato sauce, simple maple sausage, crisp bacon, perfectly seasoned house-made black pudding, and a small portion of butter-sautéed mushrooms with garlic and fresh herbs. Just gorgeous. The visual star on the plate was the stunning slice of ripe red heirloom tomato that was reminiscent of the stained glass at the Christ Church Cathedral. The eggs were perfectly cooked and runny so I could dip my toast in. The entire plate was satisfying, filling, and comforting. I absolutely demolished the entire plate in about 10 minutes. It was that good (and I was that hungry). The coffee was also really, really good. A piping hot medium roast and fresh whole cream. The service was friendly, welcoming, and very attentive. I was there right at seven, so there was only one other couple there having breakfast. The dining room is absolutely beautiful. It’s a converted space in the beautiful former mansion of Lord Stephen, founder of the Canadian Pacific Railway. From the dark wood paneling to the zebra motif wallpaper, everything about the space was right up my alley. After breakfast, I asked if I could go upstairs and take some pictures, and they obliged—so I snapped a bunch of shots of the magnificent staircase and also popped into their upstairs bathroom. I wasn’t prepared for the ornate brass swan-neck fountains with wings—but they really fit the grandeur of the space! Other than the carved dark wood interior throughout, another big highlight was the intricate stained glass in the mid stairwell to the second floor as well as at the front entrance. Just breathtaking. Whether you have an interest in 19th century history or you’re just looking for a really good breakfast, I would highly recommend Bar George. It exceeded my expectations in every way. Bar George at Le Hotel Mount Stephen: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ $$$
