On election night, Canadians elect a majority or minority government. It’s called on TV and everything. If MPs have no firm loyalty to a party, however, then the whole concept of majority/minority governments stops making sense. Even having a prime minister stops making sense.

@ForMYCanada Bull. If Canadians are voting for the person and not the party there would be no need to indicate the federal party they belong to on the ballot. You’re either naive or disingenuous. Floor crossers tell Canadians their votes means nothing if an MP can cross with no consequences.

🇨🇦 Seeing a lot of dramatic claims today about Canada “losing democracy.” Let’s slow down and look at how our system actually works 👇 🗳️ Canadians vote for Members of Parliament in their ridings, not directly for a Prime Minister. 🏛️ The Prime Minister is simply the leader who can command the confidence of the House of Commons. 🔄 If MPs choose to sit with another caucus, it can change the balance of power in Parliament. That’s not a coup. That’s how the Westminster parliamentary system has functioned since Confederation. Do people like floor crossing? Many don’t. And that’s a fair political debate. But it has happened under governments of every political stripe. ⚠️ Claiming it’s “the end of democracy,” or threatening another convoy if Parliament shifts, isn’t defending democracy. It’s misunderstanding it. Debate the politics. Hold MPs accountable. But don’t pretend the rules of our system suddenly changed. #Canada 🇨🇦 #CanadianPolitics #Parliament #Democracy

@JJ_McCullough @ThomasWatsonCD Except they aren't. We have 343 elections to elect local representatives. People who we elect to use their judgement to do what they think is best. Choosing to caucus with one group or another is part of that judgement we elect them to exercise.

@JJ_McCullough @kevindperry89 @ThomasWatsonCD If this was the other way ie liberals crossing the floor none of these people would be arguing that you vote for individuals but since it’s in their favour they are claiming it’s a good thing.

Two crews. The same dream. Dad would have loved every second of this past week. He believed in what space exploration said about humanity: that our best instinct is to go further, together. Safe travels home, Artemis II crew. LLAP 🖖 @nasaartemis #startrek #toboldlygo #nasa

On Marilyn Gladu, the least defensible of the floor crossings, how to square terrible beliefs with her Liberal caucus membership, and why the difference between peace time and war time matters quite a lot here
Evan Scrimshaw@EScrimshaw

“We cannot act like this is a crisis and then purity test the Conservatives who cross. Either we have the luxury of pickiness or we don’t. If it’s a crisis, we don’t. Fuck Gladu’s previous beliefs, sure. But I’d much rather her voting for us than against us.”

It seems to be more and more likely that the European Federation of Nations will look like this by 2050. Would you support that? 🇪🇺 Yes or No?

Trump can only be removed under the 25th Amendment with the actions of this Republican vice president, this Republican cabinet, and this Republican-controlled Congress. So, if you're asking what Democrats are doing today, I'm not sure you understand how this all works.

Given Trump’s Easter threats to carry out new war crimes in Iran, we should think one or two steps ahead about a coup attempt connected to the war. And then deter it. (1/17)

AI writes well because people have been writing well for so long. AI tools are trained on actual writings by real people. To now assume every good piece of writing is enabled by AI is so unfair to those who have crafted the art well before AI.

Tonight at sundown, Jewish communities in Canada and around the world will mark the start of Passover. Over the next eight days, Jewish Canadians will gather to honour that shared history and celebrate the resilience that continues to unite them. I wish a happy Passover to everyone celebrating. Chag Pesach Sameach.

My first time being aware of Pesach was in college. I had just started getting involved in kiruv and knew very little. My way of 'observing' was getting the non-breaded chicken from the uni cafeteria. Tonight I'll be celebrating with family and my baby in a pesadic setting.
