I remember when Arlen Spectre switched parties. When he was asked, his answer was simple, "to be re-elected". I fear there are very few congress people that really care about their party or the people they represent. They care only about staying on the power high and gravy train that their position gives them.

If the senate is going to do pro forma sessions during every single one of their breaks to prevent President Trump from making recess appointments, the president should counteract that by not letting them take vacations at all. They can work straight through on solving all of the issues the country faces at the moment.

Bypassing the 60 vote cloture threshold in the Senate will not “destroy the institution” of the Senate. But you know what will? Taking a two week Spring vacation while the Department of Homeland Security remains unfunded. Protect the institution. Bypass the filibuster.

My problem with ending birthright citizenship is that we are clearly incapable of deporting the tens of millions of illegals already here. So we will create a massive population of non citizens living side by side us. That’s a recipe for disaster.

@SenJohnBarrasso the addage that actions speak louder than words is very accurate. Your words ring very hollow in light of the actions you took with the unanimous consent deal worked out between Leader Thune and Senator Schumer. Your fingerprints are there. You were at the 3 am meeting. You do not get to stab your constituents and the American people in the back and then run in front of a camera or post on X blaming the other party. If you actually fought to win and enforced a talking filibuster, stayed during your "vacation" and took care of the people in DHS I would respect you. Instead you played a political game, try to ram something through so you could leave town and got caught and called out in the process. Please consider retirement and let the people of Wyoming find a suitable replacement for you who will represent them well with integrity.

The Senate must reconvene This is crazy
Chad Pergram@ChadPergram

The Hitchhiker’s Guide To What To Expect On DHS Funding When The Senate Meets Monday The DHS funding drama heads back to the Senate Monday morning after the House approved a two-month stopgap spending plan for all of DHS late Friday night. The Senate meets Monday at 10:30 am et in what was supposed to be a brief “pro forma” session where the body simply gavels in and gavels out with a skeleton crew on hand. But that might not be what happens Monday. As soon as the Senate gets through the prayer a pledge, it’s likely a Republican senator seeks recognition from the chair. If that happens, we anticipate the GOP senator to ask unanimous consent (meaning all 100 senators would agree) to take up the DHS bill passed by the House Friday, that it be “read a third time” and passed. The chair will then ask if there is an objection. If any senator - be they a Democrat or Republican - objects, the House bill is dead. That means that the House and Senate continue to be out of alignment on the DHS funding question. For instance, the House didn’t even consider the bill cleared by all 100 senators and passed by the Senate at 2:19 am Friday. The House simply wrote their own two-month interim bill, passed it Friday night and skipped town. If there is no objection, the House and Senate are aligned and will have passed the same bill. That means they are on the same page. Approval of the House bill by the Senate would end the DHS shutdown. But if there’s an objection, everything remains frozen. This is both the parliamentary magic - and dark underbelly of “unanimous consent” in the Senate. You could have 99 senators in favor of something. But all it takes is a solitary objection to foil a bill under “unanimous consent” or “UC” as it’s often called in the Senate. In fact, it’s possible that Democrats could then offer their own DHS funding bill and ask the Senate to approve that by unanimous consent. It’s likely that whatever Republican senator is on duty tomorrow would object, thus blocking the Democratic request. If the Senate blocks the House bill, it’s doubtful there’s any way to end the DHS shutdown until after both bodies return in mid-April after the Easter/Passover recess. Republicans truly want to fund DHS. But a Democratic objection presents the GOP with a political opportunity. They can then point to that objection as the reason DHS remains shuttered, arguing that Democrats blocked the House approved bill. Republicans believe this helps them in the midterms. They ran on border security and won in 2024. Republicans want to point to a Democratic objection as evidence that they don’t want to fund ICE. But by the same token, Democrats could argue that Republicans are partly responsible for the shutdown and the long TSA lines if they object to the Democratic unanimous consent request. And so it goes.

@BasedMikeLee I have been cheering you on in your campaign to get the Save America act passed. I appreciate your intensity and focus, but at some point you are going to have to bravely fund four other senators and force a vote to replace Senator Thune as majority leader with someone who will actually commit to putting in the work to get things done. Your words are great. It is now time for action!

The Senate’s in an abusive relationship with the Zombie Filibuster The American people can’t afford it It’s time to end it
Mike Lee@BasedMikeLee

How did we get to be $39 trillion in debt? The zombie filibuster—coupled with a chronic unwillingness among senators to break through it by putting in the hard work—has contributed to it substantially. For decades, this dynamic has been giving Senate Democrats way too much power when it comes to spending bills—even when they’re in the minority. Spending bills in the Senate routinely get to 60 votes—regardless of who’s in the majority and who controls the House and the White House—with votes coming from (1) basically every Senate Democrat and (2) a much smaller group of Republicans (predominantly members of the Appropriations Committee), in many cases just a few more than whatever it takes to achieve cloture. As a result, disagreements on spending bills tend to be resolved by simply spending more—to give those voting for it what they need to vote for it. This is one of many reasons why I’ve been pushing so hard on the talking filibuster which, if fully utilized and given the time it needs to work, could help us pass the SAVE America Act. But the benefits wouldn’t end there, as they could help us avoid not only the kind of shutdown hell we’re now experiencing, but also rein in our debt and deficit—at least while Republicans are in charge. Share if you’d like to see the Senate use the talking filibuster—to fully fund DHS, to pass the SAVE America Act, to reduce spending, and otherwise!

Barrasso and Thune are the biggest traitors in the Senate. Senator John Barrasso, as Senate Majority Whip, played a CENTRAL role in pushing through the partial DHS funding bill at 3 a.m. in a near-empty Senate chamber. At 3 a.m., he declared 'Time is up' and helped push the partial bill through by voice vote in an empty chamber — funding everything except ICE/CBP enforcement. No roll call. No accountability. Schmitt tried to fix it immediately with a separate ICE bill. Democrats blocked it. This is how trust erodes. House is rejecting it. Time for real Senate leverage on deportations — not 3 a.m. carve-outs. @SenJohnBarrasso explain the optics? @SenateGOP @LeaderJohnThune #FundICE #BorderSecurity #DHSFunding #NoMoreSurrenders

@RepEliCrane I honestly believe the vast majority of senators love the zombie filibuster. It allows them to make safe votes they can run on for reelection, it allowed them to be dangerously lazy, and it gels ensure they never miss a good vacation.

I agree with President Trump. Congress doesn’t have to be useless. There is another way. The Senate should terminate the filibuster and start delivering real wins for the American people.
Bill Melugin@BillMelugin_

BREAKING: President Trump tells colleague @JacquiHeinrich in a call that the Senate bill that passed in the overnight hours to fund all of DHS except CBP & ICE “wasn’t appropriate.” “Well, it wasn't good. It wasn't appropriate,” Trump told Jacqui. “Now what they should do is they should terminate the filibuster, Jacqui, and just vote, but you have three or four Republicans in there that are not doing the right thing. You can't have a bill that's not going to fund - in my opinion, you can't have a bill that’s not going to fund ICE. You can't have a bill that's not going to fund any form of law enforcement, of which ICE is a big form, and so is Border Patrol.”

I’ve spent some time thinking about the events surrounding the senate passing a weakened funding bill in the middle of the night. It’s pretty obvious it was thrown together last minute do the senate could leave town for their coveted vacations. People have mocked @SenMullin for being a plumber before getting into politics. The crazy thing is that people who work in the trades, the plumbers, the farmers, the ranchers, the utility workers, etc.; they don’t just up and leave a problem because the calendar says it’s vacation time. They stay with it, work on it, and solve it. The electorate deserves to be represented by people committed to doing actual work. It’s sad they don’t seem to take their jobs that seriously.

Don’t fall for the dooming on the TSA thing. The Democrats didn’t get anything they wanted. If you see a unmasked ice agent with a judicial warrant, let me know. Sometimes you just have to end things. The TSA thing wasn’t helping us. Now it’s gonna go away. Are there tactics techniques and procedures we can use the next time to be more effective? Of course. Silence gives way to consent. Members of his own party should be holding him accountable by either forcing him to do what is right, or replacing him with someone who will. I am completely tired of rhetoric without action. Republican senators need to do something to get the things they were voted into the majority for passed and put into law. It most likely starts with a new majority leader that understands the assignment and implements it.

It's not just about donations, it's also about elections. What good does it do us to elect Republicans if they do not do the things we specifically elect them to do? We have got to find candidates that know how to fight, how to win, and how to listen to their constituents. This uniparty weak BS is ruining the republic.
